HANOI, Vietnam — Vietnam has asked international health experts to help investigate a mystery illness that has killed 19 people and sickened 171 others in an impoverished district in central Vietnam, an official said Friday.

The infection has mostly affected children and young people. It begins with a high fever, loss of appetite and a rash that covers the hands and feet. Patients who are not treated early can develop liver problems and eventually face multi-organ failure, said Le Han Phong, chairman of the People's Committee in Ba To District in Quang Ngai province.

Nearly 100 people remain hospitalized, including 10 in critical condition. Patients with milder symptoms are being treated at home. The illness responds well to treatment if detected early, but 29 patients have been reinfected, Phong said.

An unidentified illness? That's not good.
That may be the single gayest thing I have ever read on this board. Or the old one. ;)

I wonder if this is a new Plague and if it is I wonder if it will end up like The Black Death?

Oh good, things have been a little quiet on the disease front ever since Swine Flu fell out of vogue.

I'd like to believe that we can contain or at least slow the spread of a disease these days better than back when the black death was up and about.
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

I so wish that was their actual slogan.
Still, I'm proud the CDC was established in my state.   Just... I hope that there's no breeches or anything or I'd be one of the first to be screwed with who knows what death-dealing things they have deep in their vaults.

They actually have special rooms that are kept at negative pressure, so that if there is a breach, the air rushes in, not out. Science is awesome.

What....I got bored

*kicks the vials and plane tickets under his bed*

To be a bit more serious I'm quite fascinated by this, I hope there will be an update on what this disease actually and what its caused by.

On the note of the CDC there was this one case where thanks to nepotism a guy with drug resistant TB got on a plane

It is entirely possible that this could be an environmental/pollution-related illness rather than an infectious disease.  Wouldn't be the first time...
