LulzSec Top Members arrested, betrayed by their own member
« on: March 06, 2012, 09:42:17 am »
The laughs are reportedly over for five top members of the hacker group LulzSec who were arrested on Tuesday and charged as part of a conspiracy case filed in New York federal court. FoxNews.com reports that the arrests were part of a multinational sting across the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States on Tuesday morning, and LulzSec leader Hector Xavier Monsegur, who operated online under the alias “Sabu,” provided the Federal Bureau of Investigation with information leading to the arrests. According to the report, Monsegur has been working with the FBI for months. “This is devastating to the organization,” an FBI official told FoxNews.com. “We’re chopping off the head of LulzSec.” Read on for more.

LulzSec, which became part of the larger hacker collective “Anonymous Operations” last year, has launched a number of high profile cyberattacks since last summer. The group’s first widely reports attacks targeted a number of digital properties belonging to Sony, and more than 1 million accounts were compromised as a result of the group’s efforts.

The group also waged war on the U.S. government, and encouraged other hackers to ”open fire on any government or agency that crosses their path.” This brazen move may have intensified the FBI’s efforts to take down the organization, as a series of arrests were made soon after operation “AntiSec” began.

LulzSec leader Hector Monsegur reportedly pleaded guilty to a dozen hacking-related charges on August 15th last year, and his ensuing cooperation with the FBI’s investigation will likely earn him a reduced sentence. ”They caught him and he was secretly arrested and now works for the FBI,” a unnamed source said to be close to Sabu told FoxNews.com.

Sure it is just one small part of the hive mind that is Anonymous but I find it interesting that they were sold out by one of their own.  I guess its every anon for themselves in the end.

I guess the FBI doesn't realize that Anonymous is like a hydra. This won't stop them, if anything it might make them stronger and more aggressive toward the government, which I have no problem with. For all the asshole things members of Anonymous have done, they have also done great things.   "We are anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget." -member of anonymous

They get it, that's why you don't have every last twat who quotes that line getting arrested.

They also grasp that the number of honestly competent people involved are fairly small, and that more organized groups such as these guys are far more dangerous. Plus declaring open war on a government is generally a bad idea if you're anything short of a larger government. Even then it's generally problematic.

Now, if you don't know why I have exactly 0 sympathy for these guys, you obviously didn't get your credit card details leaked because of them.

That's why they make Game cards and prepaid credit cards.  If I buy online that is what I use if I can't find a game card (Xbox gold cards etc) I just load up a prepaid credit card with the amount needed to make the online purchase and so that way if a company has their credit card database compromised I just toss the card away and go buy a new one.  Might be a bit more of a hassle but at least it is safer to a degree.

To some extent, but all it took to deal with the issue was spending a few days cardless and a day to get a bunch of charges pulled from my card. I'm not sure how well pre-paid cards would deal with getting hijacked.

Being that I own a 360 not PS3, no I didn't have my (parents) credit card info jacked. I didn't say I support this group of those actions in the least. That was a complete dick move. Since Anonymous is anyone that calls themselves such, you can't really hold the rest of them guilty of the crimes of a much smaller portion. Declaring war on the goverment wouldn't be the smartest thing to do, but I'm sure some Anons would try if they could get enough support behind them, they tryed to help start a revolution in Iran once. They might be able to take on a smaller government successfully, but I don't know. I remember hearing of a group of hackers that almost destroyed the Internet itself, twice, they were apparently really close the second time.

Oh look, the Anonymous-wannabes got arrested because they forgot the first thing about being Anonymous.

No organization.

They were script kiddies on a power trip that decided to make an attempt to rule the internet, and it not only bit them in the ass, it tore them a new hole entirely.

Outside of them hacking Minecraft once, I haven't been at all affected by them.  However, I am quite frankly glad that they're arrested, so I actually have anti-sympathy for them.

You guys probably know that I already generally hate Anonymous, though I agree with their ideals, such as they are.  However, I also have a lot of... mmm, what's the word... "respect" for Anonymous, due to their size and apparently their unique ability to herd cats.

...LulzSec was just fucking pathetic and I'm glad that they were taken out.  That means less of the rotten elements of Anonymous.
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

Unless they were going around with wire cutters, snipping phone and cable lines across the globe, it seems as though someone was pulling your leg.

I figured it was bullshit. I think it supposedly in the earlier days of the net. Something about the taking out the 27(or some number around there) "main" or "core" servers or some shit. Supposedly the second attempt took down all but two. I think I heard it on Tvtropes.com in a real life section of a trope but I'm not sure which trope it was. Like I said, I didn't think it was true. I'm the local computer expert and I've never heard of these "core servers" before, unless that chart of the "deep web" level 8 counts, but I know that things bull.

No, but you do have to actually PUT your card info on your account.  Which I never did on my bro's PS3, because I rarely used it and had no intention of ever buying DLC.  All they had on me was that Username the_L_rox has a hotmail account and is female.  My hotmail account is used generally for forums, porn-swapping, and for other non-money-related stuff I do on the Internet.

I just wish game companies would accept PayPal or the like.

^^ I was referring to theoretical incidents where the actual credit card company's database is compromised, rather than the Sony one. Sorry, I probably should have been clearer about that.

I think it supposedly in the earlier days of the net.

Ah, that makes more sense. "Destroy" is a bit of an overstatement (and "a bit of an overstatement" is a major understatement ;)), but it's certainly believable that targeting a relatively small number of key severs -- compared with however many you'd have to target nowadays -- could have been fairly devastating back in the days of old. Even so, it would have been more of a set-back than a case of the internet being obliterated completely.

I don't. Anon is just people. There's going to be all kinds of different reasons to be around or to hate other people. Same with anything else since forever
