Not anymore, but we can be again.  The first step is to break down the barriers that have sprouted up over the years.  After that, we need to get rid of the complacency, regressivism, anti-intellectualism, bigotry, and immorality that has plagued our nation.  Step three is to finally solve the problems.

So true, all of it. I watched it all happen just in my lifetime. And yes, so correctable.

Unfortunately, few people can agree on what's immoral, outside a few very narrow areas. So trying to "end immorality" is pissing in the wind, at best.

If you look at it logically, cannibalism has great potential to simultaneously solve our overpopulation and food shortage problems.

Anyone notice the "178th in infant mortality" line? I would guess that's one scale you don't want to be near the top of.

I think that rating actually means that our infants are MORE likely to die than in the 177 countries above us.

Under that interpretation, America is nowhere near 178. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_mortality_rate
No, I'm guessing whoever wrote that speech just saw a rating where the US was not at the top and went with it without paying too much attention.

Poverty and lack of insurance are about the only causes of infant mortality being much higher than it should be, considering the quality of medical care available - if you can afford it, and your insurance will cover it - here in the US. The Affordable Care Act/ Obama Care will actually help solve this problem, once all the screaming and kicking over it peters out, after all phases go into effect.

There has never been an American golden age of either kind. We've progressed in some ways and regressed in others. There's always been opportunities and freedoms in one hand and great injustices and horribleness in the other. The best we can do is strive to make the ratio as good a one as possible. Working towards a former golden age that never existed will get us nowhere. Forward into the future, not backwards.
