...OH MY GOD, NO, CHILDREN OF FIFTEEN/SIXTEEN ARE TOO YOUNG TO KNOW THE ACTUAL NAMES FOR BODY PARTS! IT'S SO MUCH SAFER AND NORMAL AND TOTALLY LESS CREEPY FOR THEM TO KEEP CALLING THEM THEIR 'NO-NO-PARTS' THAN IT IS FOR A TEACHER TO SAY THE WORD 'VAGINA' OR 'PENIS' OR 'TESTICLES' IN A BIOLOGY CLASS.

But The Raw Story reports that some students who are rallying around McDaniel believe those who complained about the teacher's methods may be motivated by religion.

Per the most recent statistics, nearly 66% of all Lincoln County adherents are affiliated with the Mormon Church, which specifically requires parents to "ensure that the [sex education] instructions given to their children are consistent with sound moral and ethical values."

That reminds me of this paper:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2655816/ (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2655816/)

Abstract:

Quote
This paper presents results of a consumer health vocabulary study of text appearing on Web-based bulletin boards. Consumers used obscenities and euphemisms to refer to certain body parts, functions, and behaviors. The female genitalia are the body region most often described with an obscenity (29% of all instances); male genitalia, in contrast, were rendered as obscene only 3% of the time. Consumers responding on the bulletin boards appear genuinely to prefer euphemistic slang and baby talk (62%) over obscenities (24%) when referring to the buttocks. From an anatomical perspective, this large dataset reveals a consumer health vocabulary of euphemisms and outright obscenities coexisting with professional medical terminology. The evident preference for euphemisms and slang for some anatomical parts has important implications for the design of health information controlled vocabularies and translation systems, faced with a lay language more informal than expected.

Isn't vagina a medical term? I mean since when has it been a swear word? Or even a "naughty" word?

If those kids aren't allowed to even hear about human anatomy and such things then they should not have been to those classes, which would have been easy since the teacher specifically asked if anyone would feel uncomfortable while discussing the topic and gave them a chance to skip those classes.

So either we are dealing with complete idiots or these kids were used as a tool to create a controversy and get rid of this teacher.

...Or both.

Things have gotten steadily worse since I was a 10 year old, not a 10th grader, and learned the terms; vagina, penis, uterus, etc. in my elementary school health education class. This school was in a politically conservative, wealthy town. It was 1970. And they had taught this class since the 1950's. And nobody's parents freaked out about it. Because all the fanatic parents put their kids in religious/parochial school.....where they STILL had better sex education taught by nuns than is allowed in all these fuckwit-ruled red states nowadays.

They taught it in my school-going years pretty early too.  I believe it was 5th grade or so.  In fact the teachers and speakers they had for sex ed and biology type classes preferred to use the actual terms for the genitalia.

My first sex ed class was in 4th grade, and medical terms were used.

Mine was in fifth grade, and medical terminology was used there as well. I did not die or become a hooker and I don't have PTSD because of it. So nyaah.

Talk about a bunch of five-year-olds. I hope they realize that, unless they plan on forcing their children to live with them for the rest of their lives, they're going to be exposed to horrifying words like "vagina." And with such sheltering, at least some of them are going to freak the hell out once they're living on their own, without mommy and daddy to shield everything.

From what I understand, actually, there's a little bit more to the story -- unfortunately, the internet isn't necessarily immune to sensationalist reporting, so I'm finding a lot of articles saying more or less the exact same thing (I can't find any straightforward non-opinionated articles)

I did find one source but I'm not sure I trust it either, but it lines up with things I've heard elsewhere.

This doesn't mean that I don't believe this investigation to be bullshit, mind.

McDaniel said that parents objected to him teaching the biology of an orgasm and used the word ‘vagina’ during the lesson on the reproductive system in a biology class for the tenth grade.

A letter from the Idaho State Department of Education to McDaniel outlined the allegations made against him. They include sharing confidential student documents with a person other than the students’ parents, teaching different forms of birth control, showing a video that depicted an infection of genital herpes and telling inappropriate jokes in class.

The first bolded bit may be important depending on the type of detail involved.

The second bolded bit, if it's true, is definitely wrong and terrible.

That being said, I think they're reaching for things, and that overall this new information doesn't change the fact that this is all bullshit.  Especially if they're citing teaching various methods of birth control as a problem.

In my experience, sexual education in American high schools does not teach students how to actually have sex in a safe and enjoyable way. Like, at all. They mostly talk about STDs and pregnancy, go over basic anatomy in a way that makes genitalia really boring, and spend about five seconds on condoms.

My first sex ed class was in 4th grade, and medical terms were used.

So was my experience - with a video. Of course we had our parents around. We were told that "If you laugh you're immature" - right before the video promptly showed a time-lapse diagram/simulation of an erecting penis (it was drawn) - even most of the adults were snickering.

In my primary school sex ed, we were given the all clear to giggle like morons as much as we damn well pleased. I suppose the teacher realised that trying to stop a bunch of 11 year olds from laughing at penises and vaginas was a completely futile endeavour.
Title: Re: Teacher says the word vagina in biology class.
Post by: Caitshidhe on March 29, 2013, 03:46:51 am
...actually, I'm pretty sure I remember the teacher telling us all to get it out of our systems BEFORE the actual lesson started. And kept repeating 'PENIS. VAGINA. TESTICLES. BREASTS. ERECTION,' over and over, while a class of ten-year-old kids laughed until the words weren't funny anymore. I don't think anybody laughed, except one guy who was the class asshole and got sent from the room and spent the rest of the lesson outside the door pounding on it until someone too him to the office.

Our sex education in elementary school was sex-segregated. Apparently in the boys' class, if you laughed at a word you had to go up to the front of the room and say it five times.

High schoolers aren't old enough to hear words like that!

...It's a biology class.  How the fuck are you supposed to talk about reproduction without naming the organs involved?

And once again, I feel like the odd one out.  The existence of sex was glossed over until I was in high school, and sex ed mostly consisted of the word "Don't."

I'm reminded of a couple of joke mugs I've seen in novelty magazines.

In one, a little boy and girl are shown in the bathroom (nude from behind). Boy: "No, you can't touch it! You already broke yours off!"

In another, they're shown with the boy balancing on top of the girl's head like in a circus act.
Boy: "Well, we took our clothes off and I climbed on top of you. When does it start feeling good?"
Girl: "I don't know, but I'm already getting a headache!"

If it's about him allegedly sharing personal information, then I can understand why they're upset but harping about his saying "vagina" is really stupid! Why focus on the latter rather than the former? It's like they don't care if they sound insane or not, or they're more concerned with the "vagina" stuff.

Call me suspicious, but if this was ACTUALLY about the teacher sharing confidential information, then that'd be what they'd all be screaming and making the biggest (justified!) fuss about. Not this whole 'OH NO, VAGINAS!!!' crap. Sounds like they're just grasping at straws and accusing the teacher of doing even worse shit just to discredit or demoralize him--possibly in the hope that, whatever the outcome of the investigation, the teacher will either be chased from the school or resign.

Oh, I'm sure of this, too.

I'm just saying it's apparently about more than saying the word "vagina" -- though realistically, if it IS anything else, it's also about the description of a female orgasm.  For some reason.

And I mean that in the most literal of senses.  After she and I broke up, she decided it wasn't worth the effort to shower, even if she was getting some action, which was often.
