BBC is focusing on what's really important and explains why we have lost so many celebrities this year:
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36108133?ocid=socialflow_facebook&ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=facebook
Short version: A lot of our celebs are baby boomers and since we have a lot of celebs approx the same age they've all reached the age where they started dropping off like flies. Add to that few older celebs dying and a few younger one's who die suddenly and you get the season of death.
(While looking at celebrity deaths on Wikipedia I found out that Will Smith had been shot to death earlier this year.)

Wait. What?
*googles* No, looks like he's still alive.

It happened two days ago: http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2016/04/will_smith_death_report_gun_on.html
Though we may be talking of different Will Smiths.

Yeah, different people. I was thinking of the actor.

Don't feel too bad. There were a lot of people mixing up George Martin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Martin) with George R. R. Martin when the former died.

And there at least there's some difference.

That does not actually explain the phenomenon they discuss?
Their observation is that there has been a sharp jump in celebrity deaths in 2016 compared to similar periods in the past few years. Except... if the reason is that a large share of celebrities are baby boomers, then the increase should be visible over decades, not years. Celebrities who are old now were not that much younger in 2012. Besides, we are talking about a range of ages of over a decade, the older celebrities to die in 2016 were older in 2012 than some of the younger ones that died this year were.
My alternate explanation is, y'know, random chance matters a lot when talking about things with small sample sizes.
