Scary Shit: Sinkhole Swallows Bedroom

A guy who was sleeping fell into said sinkhole.  They don't think he lived.  It's apparently really fucking deep (~50-60 feet!).

Yep, those things are kinda common when you have a lot of groundwater and caves.  One opened up down the road from me about a year or so ago.  An SUV ran over a weak spot under the asphalt and got swallowed up about 10 feet deep.  Nobody was hurt.

On a very serious note, that is some very scary shit. I distinctly remember how a good amount of Florida was built on reclaimed swampland. And I have to wonder if that strategy is now biting us in the ass.

Florida has a very high water table (in layman's terms: the earth between us and groundwater is a much thinner layer than normal). The good news is that we have very easy access to large amounts of groundwater. The bad news is that our building capabilities are limited due to hitting water very quickly.

A lot of people know about the Magic Kingdom's Utilidors, underground tunnels that hold the employee areas and allow for people to cross the park without ever being seen by guests. What most people don't know is that in order to do this, all of the land scooped out for the Seven Seas Lagoon (the artificial lake that the Magic Kingdom and several resorts are on the shore of) had to be piled up on the shore to build the theme park on. So the Magic Kingdom is actually built one story above ground.
