...and she did it from under her bed.

...growing under the bed of 17-year-old high school senior Sarah Volz may be the answer to a question that’s stumped the largest oil companies in the world: How do you make algae biofuels financially viable so they can replace petroleum-based fuels at the gas station?

Volz, the winner of the 2013 National Intel Science Talent Search, may be on track to solving this problem, all from the lab that’s she’s built under her loft bed in her parents’ Colorado Springs, Colo., home.

In her research she developed a process of artificial selection where she killed off algae with low levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), an enzyme crucial to lipid synthesis. Left behind in the beakers under her bed were an efficient bunch of high yield algae, which she discovered produced a significant increase in lipid production.

But can the space under her bed meet world demand?
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

It doesn't have to; all the companies have to do is figure out how to replicate her process on a large scale.

If you look at it logically, cannibalism has great potential to simultaneously solve our overpopulation and food shortage problems.

Don't.  It's hard for me to tell sometimes, too XD

T'would be really nice to not need petroleum oil any more. It would solve an insane number of problems.

That said, is this kid really the first person to think of that? If the problem was that only some algae gives high yields of fuel, then artificial selection should've been the first thing to be tried.

Could well be no one came up with the right selection process. But, it's probably more likely that it's either not feasible at larger scales or got squished by a company more interested in oil.

Unless she developed how to kill algae with low levels of ACCase. Did she just find out the levels of oil from the populations and discarded the ones that had the lowest? It seems unlikely that it wouldn't have been discovered by now.
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

I really hope the oil companies don't crush this, because you KNOW they WILL try to.

We're gonna need a bigger boat bed.
Congratulations.  You found Ronald Reagan. He’s living in each and every one of you.  Just waiting to gnaw his way out of your chest and skitter off into the ventilation ducts.
