Ghostbusters 3 will have female cast
« on: October 09, 2014, 02:06:38 am »
...And I have already seen fans bitching and complaining that the movie will be shit.

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/10/08/paul-feig-ghostbusters-female/?hootPostID=1b48261a6b2a0769ba3baabd3e53861d

Also, the movie will be alternate universe. Because the director wants to make a "origin story" rather than deal with the established canon. That bit is a disappointment but I will not condemn a movie until I've seen it.

And honestly the fan comments I have seen are just pathetic. Die hard fans complaining that their favourite aging (or dead) actors won't be the stars. Dudebros bitching that women ruin everything they touch.

I suppose they think that only chick flicks and lesbian porn are allowed to have female main characters.

EDIT: My favourite complaint comes from some moron who rants about "pandering" and complains about "female-versions" of good movies. At some point he was countered that Feig just happens to make movies with female cast just like all directors have their fan actors. Tarantino was mentioned as an example and the moron starts bitching that Tarantino is famous for the female roles in his movies and names a bunch of women who played roles in his movies.

...So any movie that has a strong female character is only done to "pander" to women?

Sounds like a cool movie. I might go see it when it comes out. Really wish the idiots would stop giving my gender a bad name.

I think I'm going to pass if they have nothing better to do than make a gender-flipped remake with Paul Feig. Seriously, it sounds like bad fanfiction: Bridesmaid crosses over with the Ghostbusters. Apparently, none of you remember this man's other work.

I would rather have Taratino or Del Toro do it, but apparently the powers that be have turned to the comedic genius who was the maker of Bridesmaids. Because clearly, I am David and Unaccompanied Minors were gold on film. Bridesmaids was a utter outlier, in terms of commercial acclaim and the sheer amount of horrid ripoffs it inspired.

Cue all the moral panic over me targeting a shitty male director for daring to remake Ghostbusters with women, as this is clearly going to be the highest grade of comedy available and not total shit. It's not the idea itself, it's just the director is utter shit.

I wonder how many threads on AVFM and r/MENSRIGHTS complaining about this being a sign of the "pusification of American culture"?

And even if they go with this horrid choice of director and this odd decision for a remake, they'd be stupid if they didn't get the creature design up to snuff. Practical effects have advanced a bit in recent years and I expect some new looks for the Gozerian abominations to accompany the newer, younger team.

Ungh.  You are not exaggerating.  I visit one of the larger Ghostbusters fan sites and exactly what you say happened when the Feig rumors started a couple months back.

Up until I saw this, I was all about another movie. So excited for any thing I could get my hands on.

Now, pass. I hope this fades and we get something decent or nothing at all. I don't want to see some stereotypical fat woman making cliche jokes or lame ass oh no you didn't bullshit.

This is going to give me nightmares.

I loved Bridesmaids, but an all females GB would be retarded. I'd love to see Kylie Griffin, but let's face it, ghostbusting is more of a man's job. The hard science, the heavy equipment, the stress, the danger, the horror, etc. -- not exactly for women.

I think when you have an all male cast in a comedy like Ghostbusters, the humor tends to be more generalized and it isn't specifically about the characters being men, it's a comedy about catching ghosts. But with an all female cast, I feel like the humor would end up being too woman-centric and the ghostbusting part would just be something in the background.

And those were just on the first of the five pages it ran before a Mod closed it...

I'm as big a Ghostbusters fan as anyone, but frankly...I'm not all that enthused.  Not because of the female cast idea--far from it--but more this part:

Also, the movie will be alternate universe. Because the director wants to make a "origin story" rather than deal with the established canon

Yeah, that puts it much closer to "pass" territory.

And since (again, active on the Ghostbusters fan sites) I've been hearing "It's really going to happen this time and we'll be filiming some time next year" for, literally, a dozen years now, I'm not going to get all that worked up over something that may end up exactly where Aykroyd's Hellbent script or the Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky script or Etan Cohen's script ended up.   Nowhere.

We'll see, I guess

If I feel anything about this other than apathy, it would be mild annoyance that they have to dredge up and butcher a dead franchise rather than, you know, coming up with something original. Geez, at least make a "spiritual successor" if you really must ride someone else's coat tails.

I'm going to reserve judgment until the movie is actually made and released.

There are a great many things out there that have utterly stupid concepts and turn out to be flawless gems.

And there are also a great many things that have fantastic concepts that couldn't possibly turn out wrong, and they do.

"This is gonna suck."
"Well I'll wait until the movies released to judge."
(90% of comments about a new movie are just variations of these two quotes.)

I would like to point out that they've been trying to get the third Ghostbusters movie started for years. FOR DECADES! And this is the first time a project gets this far.

All the other directors who have been offered this movie, all the other writers who have been approached over this project... None of them got the approval of the film company.

To me that implies that there is something about this that the company thought had potential. (And concidering how much Hollywood hates giving important roles to women this had to had a lot of potential to be worth the "risk" of offering a movie that does not have 90% male cast to the audiences.)

I've heard that, psychologically, when around 40% of a group are women, the 60% of the men in that group feel outnumbered.

Obviously, I don't know if that's actual psychology, but in my admittedly limited experience, this does seem to be true.

I don't care if the cast is female or male, if the movie isn't about the original characters then I have no interest.  The cast and characters is a massive part of what made the original so good in the first place, and none of them are there (at least not as main characters, I expect there will be some cameos but that doesn't count).  I mean, remember what happened both times they tried to remake Pink Panther without Peter Sellers?  Imagine Red Dwarf (back when it was good) with completely different characters and different actors.  What's the point?  It's all about those characters and the actors who brought them to life and made them their own.

Reminds me of Expendables 3 when the movie basically stops so Stallone can recruit a new, young expendables team comprised of MMA douchebags and random nobodies, who then take over most of the rest of the film.  Stallone, despite the marketing posters I think you might not have understand the point of your own movie and why anyone would want to see it.
