Remember tomorrow US ISPs start watching your activity
« on: July 11, 2012, 03:02:44 pm »
If you're a customer of Time Warner Cable (TWC), Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), or Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group Plc. (LON:VOD), and you happen to also be a pirate of copyrighted content, you may soon find yourself warned or even have your service terminated.

Time to start P2Ping legit/legal stuff and see if I can't get rich quick off the back of this.

On the first incident customers will be sent a warning email, which requests they confirm that they received the notice.

Wait.  So does this mean they can't take action against you without acknowledgement from you that you received a warning first?  Now there's an ingenious plan.

Also, this sounds like ISPs are becoming like insurance companies.  Charge you outrageous prices for a service, then find any excuse they can to deny providing you that service once you actually try to use it.

They still haven't said how this "plan" is going to distinguish between lawful downloading and piracy, at least if they are judging by bandwidth alone.  Though I suppose if you are uploading a lot of stuff it would be easier to make the accusation of piracy.

I have downloaded a fair amount of music from various blogs, much of which is out-of-print or otherwise unavailable in the USA.  I plan to continue doing so.

For those of you who are interested, here is the Center for Copyright Information's page on how the system will allegedly work.  CCI is the industry organization responsible for administering this scheme.

And, for those of you who want some light bedtime reading, here is the Memorandum of Understanding which began the whole plan.

After reading all this, I'm not all that worried.  It seems pretty easy to circumvent.  Non-p2p downloads are not included in the plan, and if you do need to download something which may raise a red flag, you can always A) use PeerBlock, which is admittedly not a 100% perfect solution, or B) use someone else's IP address (either a public network, or some dumb schmuck's unsecured wireless network).

Fpqxz, please edit your first post and add to it instead of making multiple posts in a row.  It does update the thread with a "New" tag, so it works just as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you use something along the lines of Tor to get around this?

I'm not sure how good an idea it would be to use Tor for p2p stuff...it wasn't really made for that.  There are other ways though, if you are technically savvy enough.

No, the creators of TOR did a AMA on reddit last month and this question was asked.  They responded saying that TOR was not designed for it right now since it is still such a small network and they highly advise against using P2P on TOR.  Of course they also did say that if you did want to use P2P on TOR then start getting others to use it so the network gets big enough to support it.

Ummm, guys?

We really shouldn't be talking about how to pirate stuff on here.  Regardless of how you feel about piracy, it is still, in fact, an illegal activity.

Just sayin

Well, if it's legal, then I guess you technically have nothing to worry about.

...Unless having people watch the porn you're watching is something to worry about ._.

That I don't particularly care about, but my understanding of tech law in regards to free porn sites like the aforementioned website is poor. I'd like to know, and I think anyone else who is not so savvy would like to know, is if this would effect or capacity to beat our meats.

Right, because information on how to pirate stuff is just so hush-hush and top secret.

If people want to do it, they will find a way to do it.
