Defending Slavery at CPAC
« on: March 16, 2013, 02:46:15 pm »

I know, bashing Republicans gets tiring after a while, but it's true that their party really does have a race problem that they refuse to see. Exhibit A at the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference is a session on race and conservatism--sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots--entitled "Trump The Race Card: Are You Sick And Tired Of Being Called A Racist When You Know You’re Not One?" K. Carl Smith, a black conservative who led the session, trotted out the old "Democrats are the party of slavery and the Klan" meme, which generally went over well with the audience. He encouraged Republicans accused of racism to refer to themselves as "Frederick Douglass Republicans"--though I would say that this is merely a rebranding and has no effect on the actual substance of the party. Smith even noted that Douglass forgave his former master--the truth of which I cannot weigh in on. This led to an interruption from the neo-Confederate duo of Scott Terry and Matthew Heimbach. (Herr Heimbach, as the article points out, founded the first White Student Union at Towson University and invited Jared Taylor, a known white supremacist, to give a lecture there.) Terry accused the speaker of "reaching out to voters at the expense of young white Southern males" and seemed stunned that any former slave would have to forgive their master for providing food, clothing and shelter. And then the shit hit the fan. Well, not because of Terry's blatantly racist interjection, but because a black woman in the audience asked if the Republicans should condemn racism in political ads made by fellow Republicans. Most people interviewed on the subject seemed to either have no problem with what Terry said or, if they did, glossed over it completely.

So what I get is some guy trying to "sort of" improve the party, but then one of his party members does something just reinforces the stereotype of the party.

And this is why the GOP in it's current state will find itself in the dust bin of history. Stay Classy.

I imagined the 50s lady thinking, "All those lesbians stayed in the closet so I didn't have to look at their sexy bodies..."

I'm just happy to see that the most backwards views (at least on sexual orientation) are being held by a demographic that is quickly dying out.

There was a post I saw somewhere citing statistics that the elderly are more likely to be racist or homophobic. It's not really surprising: the world has changed massively in a very short time span, with desegregation barely being 50 years old and true gay acceptance having occurred only within the lifetimes of even our youngest members. There's still a ton of people who grew up in a bigoted time period who are inclined to maintain their well-worn views even as they seem increasingly backward. Within 40 or 50 years, it's likely that homosexuality will be accepted as much as interracial relationships are today.
Still can't think of a signature a year later.

Why do they dress up in those outfits? Are they like conservative cosplayers or something?

They think dressing in Revolutuonary War garb makes them look badass, but really it's a step below LARPing.

They honestly believe that people in the 18th century were as narrow-minded as they are and so they dress like this in a belief that america's Founding Fathers and they are on exactly the same wavelength.  They're so wrong on this that it hurts.

And no, they're not reenactors.  Reenactors tend to be more open-minded.  When you have a hobby (who am I kidding, it's a fucking lifestyle!) that involves dressing up as people from the past, you tend to be more liberal in your approach to others.

You also tend to know a little something about the time period you're dressing up in.

Ironbite-k that was horribly worded.
