Good Books on Japan?

For a long time I've been fascinated with Japan, and I've been thinking about purchasing some good books on Japanese culture and/or history. So I thought I would ask you all if you have any recommendations for me. I'm not looking for any particular era in Japan, so anything would probably be quite helpful.

Andrew Gordon has written many books on Japan, some can be quite esoteric, but his
book on modern Japan
is quite good. Mikiso Hane has also written several books,
this one
is also good. I don't know many other authors, but I could give more advice if there were specific parts of Japanese history/culture/etc you were interested in.

There are travel guides that often help get a picture of modern Japan. Also there is this blog

Well both the Nara period and Heian period are especially interesting, as well as its feudal period if that helps at all.
