Psst... Shane, try this site. You might find it. Just make sure you put a tick in the "TV shows" option. :)

I miss Napster

Twenty minutes for a song
Movie downloads -- 10 hours long
Only to learn the title was wrong
Those were the days!

That was so awesome. That made my evening, that's exactly how it was with Napster back at that time.

...I once helped DDoS the WBC website as part of Operation: Holy Diver, protesting WBC's protest of Ronnie James Dio's funeral.

Some of those "reasons" they had to take it down were pretty lulzy.
"It had no search function"

'Unwanted traffic'
Hours later a statement linked to the @AnonymousWiki twitter account announced: "We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn't think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us."

It said that 10 sites had been taken offline in response to the Megaupload shutdown including the FBI, Universal Music, RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and Hadopi - the French government agency responsible for "protecting creative works on the internet".

On Friday, Universal's webpage said: "This site is under maintenance. Please expect it to be back shortly."

Hadopi was also offline, reporting "technical problems". However, the other sites on the Anonymous list all loaded.

Security firm Sophos's blog said that the attacks were carried out by spreading links via Twitter and other parts of the internet which carried out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

"If you visit the webpage, and do not have Javascript disabled, you will instantly, without user interaction, begin to flood a website of Anonymous's choice with unwanted traffic, helping to perpetuate a DDoS attack," it said.

It noted that such attacks were illegal, meaning that users taking part in the action were breaking the law.

A tweet from one of the accounts associated with Anonymous suggested that efforts were also being made to resurrect Megaupload.

The attached link intermittently directed users to a site that resembled the shut down service.

I wonder if megauploads will be like thepiratebay, ya some court cases happened but to my knowledge the website itself is still up and running today after being raided by the FBI.

This is what ticks me off re: the takedown of Megaupload. Many, many people use the site to host personal files, or legal files (including home recordings, documents, even gaming mods) to share with others. I've seen people say that they lost gigabytes in the takedown.

As much as I don't really Anonymous and their actions, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to side with them 100%.

Anon is a bunch of whiny, self-centered jackasses with WAY too much time on their hands and an ability to overreact to world events in a way that is, frankly, awe-inspiring.

And yet, I still find I prefer them at the moment to the feds.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate my country, but I'm not blind to the fact we're capable of some stupid shit, and this crackdown, combined with the SOPA/PIPA fiasco, is a perfect example. I know Megaupload had a metric fuckton of pirated material only from second-hand knowledge obviously but it was still a legit site. I prefer Mediafire if I need to host something, but hey, nothing was wrong with Mega. I really feel for anyone who lost legit data.

Gaming mods were one of the things most likely targeted for the take down. Companies have been whining for a while over people making even miniscule changes to texts or even just translating a game that was never brought over seas.

I'm split on this.  While the Megaupload owners sound like sneaky rich conniving bastards who are exploiting other people's shit for their own financial gain, I'm not sure how I feel about copyright law and being able to use other people's works for any reason.

I suppose what I'm thinking is that these people with all their supposed goddamned money, could work out special deals with the copyright holders to distribute some of this shit.  I dunno.  All this file and Internet drama makes my head fucking spin.  So much greed/self-entitlement from both sides in the fight.  That's what happens in a capitalistic society when the most important thing ever is money, though.

That's what I don't get. If you own something shouldn't you be able to do what you want with it? I have figured out how to get custom ringtones on my phone so that I don't have to download shitty ass ringtones that have no appeal to me, but I bought my phone and own it so why can't I modify it the way I want to?
