Gingrich to build base on the moon

http://www.npr.org/2012/01/26/145882817/-president-gingrich-promises-permanent-moon-base

Quote
The space shuttle mission ended last year and with it the possibility of any imminent manned space flight. It also meant job losses on the Space Coast and a lack of a well-defined mission for NASA.

If elected, Gingrich promised, "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon, and it will be American."

Gingrich said he would encourage commercial activities in space, including science, tourism and manufacturing. And he promises, in about eight years, a rocket capable of reaching Mars.

Wouldn't you need a workable economic plan before trying that?
That may be the single gayest thing I have ever read on this board. Or the old one. ;)

While that'd be cool, and it's great that a candidate recognizes the importance of the space program, I just can't support this. I disagree so much with Gingrich politically and I wouldn't want to put up with all the bullshit he'd (try to) pass in order to get a better space program.

Who would shop there?  Space travel is expensive as hell.  There wouldn't be enough people on the moon base to support a workable economy.

It'd be more practical to build that floating city in the middle of the Pacific that some Libertarian nuts were trying to raise money for a while back.

Absolutely. A great idea. NASA needs money, and it needs money NOW.

Bullshit pandering, but I don't give a shit. So long as you properly fund science, you can waste a little money on whatever you want.

If people fall for this this proves that people don't get science.
You know how much it cost to put 2 guys on a moon for a few minutes?

Is he volunteering to go? And not come back?

Either way, I'd say he should be the first guy to attempt to live on a moonbase, however that will turn out currently.

Ok. If you gave all the money allocated on the military to NASA then maybe, just maybe you could get a couple of guys on the moon by 2020. But a full moon base? Does this guy have any idea how hideously expensive it is to get stuff even on low earth orbit.

Yeah, and I'll build a fully functioning model of the clockwork robots from that one Doctor Who episode with an old garbage can, some cardboard boxes, and a piece of string. /sarcasm

Clearly the reason for this is he must have heard the rumor that there are vast oil fields on mars /lies
There was a joke going around that the best way to re-fund nasa was to spread rumors about martian oil fields. The expectation was that there would be mars bases in 4 years run by oil companies. regardless of if there is oil or not, at least the space program would have been funded.

I for one would really like the space program to become active again. Although we need to spend time trying to find a cheaper way to get things into space. our current options are just too expensive and impractical. Of course I think Grinch is an idiot for not understanding this, but politicians really will say anything to get elected wont they.
