Like Cenk said, we should cut his salary so we know he's in it for the integrity.
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

^I agree. I MIGHT abide that decision...if the politicians forfeit their paychecks so that we know they're being sincere, and aren't allowed to take any gifts from lobbyists or anyone else as long as they're in office.

OOOOOOOOOOOH!  Think I saw this article in my twitter feed.

Yep here it is.

Someone alert the unions: raising teacher pay will actually make for worse teachers--according to one GOP lawmaker.

Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill said that increasing teacher pay is against "a biblical principle" because it might attract people who otherwise wouldn't do the job.

So....better pay means people who wouldn't otherwise teach will try to be teachers.  This moron is aware that to teach you have to have a degree right?  A fairly intensive degree?

Ironbite-right?

Um...I'd probably be angrier about this if that wasn't more than I make in a year.  In a state with a higher cost of living.

Maybe we should start paying doctors minimum wage then. Because the only ones who want to do it would do it!

But then we couldn't sue them for tens of thousands of dollars.

Does... does he not realize that this is very foundation of supply and demand?

Wait a minute, couldn't one make the same argument with CEOs who make a 10,000 times what the average teacher makes and does less for society?

This is such bullshit. Teachers don't get paid enough in my opinion. This nonsense about cutting their salary will only discourage people from wanting to be teachers.

Current teaching salaries are one of the reasons why there is a general shortage of qualified and capable teachers already. Making it less will actually force some teachers to quit just to find another job that pays enough to live on. Paying teachers more would greatly encourage people to become teachers, even people who would not normally have done so. This is a good thing. To be honest, a nation can pretty much never have too many teachers. Education is just too important.

I personally think that all public servants should effectively get the same salary, especially for politicians. Then police, nurse and teaching salaries will go up as the politicians that generally rake in millions will actually have incentive to raise their pay. Really it pisses me off to no end knowing that an elected official will do less for a country than a police officer or teacher of 20 years, but make more in their short term than those public servants will make in their lives.

Personally, I think allowing Congress to regulate its own pay was a terrible decision to begin with.

We have to give the super rich exorbitant pay to attract the "best and brightest" and motivate them to rise to the top.

Except teachers, because fuck 'em, that's why.
