I have no problem with the Roman Catholic RELIGION, it's some of the guys running it that's a problem. I also think the cover-ups are due to....
* Embarrassment, shame & denial for most of the RC leadership.
* They have a bit of a clergy-shortage and can't afford to lose any more (the fact that the solution to that problem involves relaxing some sex/marriage based rules, women clergy and optional celibacy completely escapes them).
* A minority of leaders are probably evil corrupt kid-fiddlers who think "Going Roman" in the "Roman Church" involves some good ol fashioned "Roman Pederasty".

In regards to this guy in Brazil, I get the impression that some guys start cults for the SOLE PURPOSE of indulging in their perversions. I feel the same about many of those FLDS groups. Warren Jeffs and his ilk just wanted a scheme where they, older & middle-aged guys, can get themselves some tween/teenaged girls. Why else would they often kick out all those teen boys from their cults? The whole point of the sect is "old guys marrying a bunch of young girls".

I've read that another reason, ironically enough, has to do with tolerance.  Back in the 1970s, the gay rights movement inspired something very unfortunate: attempts to destigmatize pedophilia.  And they actually managed to gain ground in Europe, with pedophilia being seriously defended and considered just as acceptable as homosexuality (if not more so) by a large number of intellectuals and some mainstream newspapers.  And this was when the Catholic Church was updating its policies for dealing with sexual abuse.

There are other factors that are worth mentioning, most of them having to do with clerical culture.  First, forgiving sins is part of a priest's job description.  Second, many priests simply don't grasp the seriousness of the offense.  And third, there's the idea among the clergy (which is thankfully starting to be seriously questioned) that a priest is a priest, no matter how heinous an individual they are.

Pedophilia is a sexual orientation, UP. They're born that way and they don't want to be treated like shit for admitting it to a psychologist.

Pedophilia shouldn't be stigmatized. Child molestation should be.

You know, hate the sin and love the sinner, and all that.
There is no plague more evil and vile to watch spread than the plague that is the Von Habsburg dynasty.

Especially since most child molesters aren't pedophiles. It's too common of a crime for too low of a background population.

Much like prison rape, a large portion of child molestation is less based on sexuality and more on power.
Excuse me, sir, do you have a minute to talk about your lord and savior, Hannibal Barca?

Yeah, if the pagans are so smart, why did Jesus invade Pagan-land on the back of a dragon and kill them all!

Well, I highly doubt any self-respecting LGBT would condone kid-fiddlin'. Plus the whole "Gay=Pedophile" chestnut is boneheaded. That said, if there was some NAMBLA stupidity going on in 1970's Europe, I'll take your word for it.

The observation that the same inflammatory rhetoric is used by the "Pedophile=Molester" crowd should give you some pause.
