Title: What Stupid Thing did the GOP say today
Post by: ironbite on December 20, 2015, 07:25:21 pm
So I started this on another board I go to and it's gone over really well.  Rather then multiple threads on the stupidity of the GOP, here's on big super thread.  And I've got a doozy of a story to begin with.

America's next target in the War on Terror, Agrabah! (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/12/poll-30-republicans-want-bomb-fictional-disney-country)

Yes.  That Agrabah.  30% are in favor of us bombing the fuck outta Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie.  Why?  I have no fucking clue!  I think because it sounds Middle Eastern or something like that.

Ironbite-I am just flabbergasted that this could happen and will now go get a drink.

That isn't just Republican stupidity. When Democratic voters were asked the same question, 19% were in favour and 36% were opposed (really now, that's 45% at the very most who realise that it's a fictional city). Far from being strictly Republican stupidity, this is the kind of stupidity that gives no fucks about political affiliation.

The options given were support, oppose, or not sure. Given that there wasn't a choice for "Agrabah is fictional", it's not obvious how you could tell how many people knew that. For all we know most people who noticed it just said "opposed" because bombing a place that doesn't exist is definitely a bad idea. Or maybe they think the Sultan is up to something nefarious, what with being an unelected, clearly incompetent ruler with access to magical artefacts of mass destruction.

Fair point. So I suppose this poll is absolutely useless for knowing how stupid anyone is, then.

Admittedly, if I were asked the question, I would probably say opposed as I doubt I would be able to recognize on the spot that Agrabah is the fictional city from Aladdin.

Everybody talks about how bad Americans supposedly are at math and science, but I think we're far worse when it comes to geography.

Sounds good to me.  Less Disney shite in the world would be an improvement.

For a follow up we can do The Republic of Carbombya (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Socialist_Democratic_Federated_Republic_of_Carbombya)

good grief, Carbombya.

Well, there is no way the totally real middle eastern country in my works, Attackistan, could be interpreted badly! The Attackistani People are a good bunch. They...just have some bad eggs and the British Imperials who cut the country into existence had a really bad sense of humor.{s}

Oh just....I'm concerned the GOP really wants to murder our elected officals.  I really am.  Because this is just, I don't know anymore.

GOP is threatening to take away Virginia Governor's security detail over Attorney General's plans to ignore CCW permits for out of state gun owners (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/terry-mcauliffe-bill-carrico-concealed-carry)

Quote
state GOP lawmaker miffed over new gun control measures is threatening to remove Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's security detail, a threat the Democratic governor's spokesperson dismissed as a “reactionary temper tantrum.”

After Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring announced Dec. 22 that Virginia would no longer recognize out-of-state concealed carry permits from 25 other states starting Feb. 1, 2016, Republican state Sen. Bill Carrico called the move “all political” and told the Bristol Herald Courier he would move to cut McAuliffe’s security detail in January.

“A lot of the governor’s power is deferred to the General Assembly at that point and I’ll be getting with my colleagues to circumvent everything this governor has done on this point,” Carrico said. “I have a budget amendment that I’m looking at to take away his executive protection unit. If he’s so afraid of guns, then I’m not going to surround him with armed state policemen.”

That's great.  Don't like what someone's doing who's technically your boss?  Just threaten to have your supporters murder them and they'll fall quietly into line.

Ironbite-DEMOCRACY!

BACK FROM THE DEAD THREAD!  I SHALL NOT LET UP SEND THIS TO PAGE 2!

Man Carly Fiorina really must love kids.  I mean that.  The woman is pro-life so she must love kids.  And she must love kids so much to kidnap about 15 of them in order to be props for an anti-choice rally. (http://theslot.jezebel.com/carly-fiorina-hijacks-preschool-field-trip-to-hold-anti-1754253966)

Quote
One of the things Carly Fiorina learned as CEO of HP was how to make use of available resources. On Wednesday, that meant capitalizing on the presence of little kids while on a campaign stop at the Greater Des Moines botanical garden. No longer were they preschoolers on a field trip—now, without the permission of their parents, they were props at Fiorina’s “right to life” forum.

According to The Guardian, Fiorina directed 15 children to the stage, where she instructed them to sit quietly in front of a banner of a fetus while she spoke about Planned Parenthood harvesting organs.

“The kids went there to see the plants,” said Chris Beck, a father of one of the children, to The Guardian. “She ambushed my son’s field trip.”

“Taking them into a pro-life/abortion discussion [was] very poor taste and judgment. I would not want my four-year-old going to that forum—he can’t fully comprehend that stuff. He likes dinosaurs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers.”

So where were the teachers in this endeavorer?  Caught unaware there was some sort of political thing going on I bet.  And there's the Fiorina campaign, just grabbing whatever comes to hand in order to shore up the poll numbers it's desperately hemorrhaging.

Ironbite-I hope someone sues.

What's scary is the more stupid things Trump says, the higher his numbers go.  If he were to say that he opposes abortion because he thinks we should shoot babies out of cannons at brown people, he'd win the nomination.

"A law that would make it illegal for criminals and terrorists to own weapons? NOT ON MY WATCH" -Chris Christie, probably.

I mean, on one hand anyone who has suffered their conviction has paid the society for their crime and might have changed their ways but I am still not sure if they really need to own guns. And I think that giving firearms to people who make terrorist threats is a very bad idea...

I'm pro-gun, and I agree with you on the general principle.  Though I think the idea of "these people should never be allowed to own a gun ever" might be going a little too far.

The way I see it with criminals, so long as it was a non violent crime like say possession of drugs then you should be allowed to own a gun, commit armed robbery no guns for you.

So Ben Carson wants an apology from CNN.  CNN's response? For what? (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ben-carson-apology-cnn_us_56b7525de4b08069c7a79878?)

Quote
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Ben Carson has an apology from Sen. Ted Cruz for his role in some Iowa phone call shenanigans the night of the caucus. Now he says he wants one from CNN.

After Saturday night’s Republican debate -- where Cruz once again apologized for his team calling Carson supporters and telling them the former neurosurgeon was suspending his campaign -- Carson now wants an apology from the news network that Cruz blames for the incident.

“Both need to apologize to the American people for distorting the process,” Carson told The Huffington Post.

ABC News brought up the incident at the debate on Saturday, asking Carson if Cruz should take further action following the drama on caucus night.

“I’m not going to use this opportunity to savage the reputation of Sen. Cruz,” Carson said. “I will say I was disappointed that members of his team thought so little of me that they thought after having hundreds, if not thousands of volunteers and college students who sacrificed their time and were dedicated to the cause -- one even died -- to think that I would just walk away 10 minutes before the caucus.”

After apologizing once again, Cruz blamed CNN, claiming the news network had inaccurately reported that Carson was suspending his campaign from “6:30 p.m. to 9:15,” and “didn’t correct that story until 9:15 that night.”

“My political team saw CNN’s report breaking news and they forwarded that news to our volunteers; it was being covered on live television,” the Texas senator said.

The news network released a statement before the event ended, claiming Cruz misstated CNN’s reporting during the debate.

"What Sen. Cruz said tonight in the debate is categorically false. CNN never corrected its reporting because CNN never had anything to correct," the statement said. "The Cruz campaign's actions the night of the Iowa caucuses had nothing to do with CNN's reporting. The fact that Senator Cruz continues to knowingly mislead the voters about this is astonishing."

Basically Cruz deliberately misread a CNN news tweet in order to parley Carson supporters into caucusing for him.  Which is kind of a dirty tactic and of course Cruz got caught, apologized to Carson for it and gets to smirk off to a smackdown in New Hampshire.  Carson, man who thinks he's got a chance in this thing, now wants CNN to apologize for basically reporting that after Iowa, he was going home for a day or two in Florida in order to get some clothing and sleep.  The pretentiousness of the demand is just amazing.  While I do think Cruz took advantage of the statement, Carson's people should have known better.  Instead, well we saw the results on Tuesday.

Ironbite-welcome to cuthroat politics Carson...enjoy the ride.

I don't think Carson is serious about running. If he was he wouldn't have accepted that bullshit from Cruz about CNN. I suspect Donald Trump is going to attack Cruz harder on this than Carson.

*blows dust off this thing*

Man forgot I had this.  So anyways, RNC going down, lots of stupid shit going down but I think the dumbest thing has to come out of Sarah Palin's mouth hole. (http://www.rawstory.com/2016/07/delete-your-career-trump-loving-sarah-palin-says-ted-cruz-is-dead-to-her/)

Quote
Turns out Ted Cruz’s partner, Carly Fiorina, had a more graceful exit from the political stage than he had.

Cruz’s broken pledge to support the will of the people tonight was one of those career-ending “read my lips” moments. I guarantee American voters took notice and felt more unsettling confirmation as to why we don’t much like typical politicians because they campaign one way, but act out another way. That kind of political status quo has got to go because it got us into the mess we’re in with America’s bankrupt budgets and ramped up security threats.

It’s commonplace for politicians to disbelieve their word is their bond, as evidenced by Cruz breaking his promise to endorse his party’s nominee, evidently thinking whilst on the convention stage, “At this point, what difference does it make?” We’ve been burned so horribly by that attitude that voters won’t reward politicians pulling that “what difference does it make” stunt again. Politicians will see — it makes all the difference in the world to us.

Oh Sarah...can't you go have another kid or something and leave the grown ups to actually do something smart?

Ironbite-jesus she's dumb.

Nah. One of two things happens:

1. Trump loses, and Cruz presents himself as the one principled Republican who refused to endorse Trump.

2. Trump wins, and Cruz presents himself as the one possible successor who spoke at his convention.

Bingo.

He knows he's got no future in Trump land so he has nothing to lose by playing the gambit and position himself for the long game as the party fractures. The worst case scenario for him is to drop out of politics and hit the celebrity circuit like Palin.
