"Evolutionary" Dr Pepper ad spurs religious kerfuffle
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:53:55 am »
From NBC News:

On Sept. 13, the soft drink maker posted to its Facebook wall an ad using the classic “March of Progress” image tweaked to promote the “evolution of flavor.” The whimsical ad showed a chimpanzee dragging his knuckles, followed by a semi-erect hominid reaching for a Dr Pepper, followed by a fully upright man walking and gulping a Dr Pepper. The images are captioned “Pre-Pepper,” “Pepper Discovery,” and “Post-Pepper” respectively.

Sounds harmless. Even banal. But about 7,000 comment and nearly 33,000 likes later, the ad is still provoking reaction by creationists who say it promotes the theory of evolution. Some are even threatening to boycott Dr Pepper. That in turn has stoked evolutionists to make counter comments. Then there's folks jumping on the pig pile just for laughs.

The link features a picture of the ad.

This, fucking THIS, is what these people choose to get upset about?  Really?!

Reminds me when these asshats started frothing at the mouth when Geico (the car insurance company) started running the cavemen commercials.

What a bunch of fucking whiners. Are all ads supposed to cater to them?

I think the real question here is how the fuck is a religious flame war on Facebook actually newsworthy?!

I don't see many people bitching and complaining about numerous advertisements promoting a specific religion... I've seen several promoting Mormonism and all of them claim how much better your life will be when you 'find Jeebus'. We don't bitch about that, so why do they think they have a right to bitch about this Dr. Pepper ad?

Seriously, what a bunch of fucking hypocrites.

Is promoting evolution the Christian version of insulting the prophet?
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

The difference is that while Muslims will burn down embassies, American Fundie Christians will only whine on the internet (with PornHub in the next tab over, no doubt).

Not necessarily. The same people who would be upset over an ad would likely be the same ones who try to get evolution removed from public schools, or homeschool their kids through brainwashing

I've spent some time formulating an advertisement that will be less offensive to our Christian colleagues.

Instead of hominid evolution, it will feature a man, crucified, straining against the nails to grab a Dr. Pepper can just out of reach. It will be captioned "dying of thirst?"

Because this features Jesus, it should calm this storm by giving everyone something to enjoy.
