KEVIN Rudd has become Australia's new Prime Minister after winning the Labor leadership ballot, three years after he lost it to Julia Gillard.

He won the ballot 57- 45 votes and it is understood he will call an August election.

You have to admit, he's a persistent little bugger. Three years after being ousted by Julia Gillard, his many many many attempts to get his old job back have finally paid off.

That said, you know what the best part is?

Quote
Returning Officer Chris Hayes said there was no spill for the deputy position, but Treasurer Wayne Swan, Craig Emerson, Joe Ludwig and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy are thought to have quit. Penny Wong has been elected as the new Labor leader in the Senate, a position previously held by Mr Conroy.

That's right. Stephen "internet censorship is totally a good idea" Conroy has finally pissed off. May he forever be kept far away from any future positions of power.

A lot of Aussies were pissed off with Julia not because of the "carbon tax" issue hyped by the corporate media but because of the way that Rudd was deposed. He annoyed the mining companies with a proposed tax on their enormous profits, they got on the phone to his shit-scared colleagues and got him knifed while in office putting Julia in his place.

It's a lovely little narrative that resonates deeply with the Australian public, but has bugger-all to do with reality. Fact is, both Rudd and Gillard are and were quite conservative and pro-business despite being in the more "left wing" of Australia's two main parties. Rudd happily bought in to the lie of Hussein's WMD's when he was in opposition and, although he's changed his stance on gay marriage since he was staunchly opposed to it when he was leader of the opposition and when he was PM.

End of the day-he's just another hack from one of the two approved parties(tm) of a western industrial democracy. Brits familiar with their own Labour party and Americans who know anything about Democrats know exactly what I'm talking about!

Good thing: Stephen Conroy's gone.

Bad thing: Tony Abbott will probably still win in September.

The party's name is the Democratic Party. It has been since 1830. Please spell correctly.

"The party must go wholly one way or wholly the other. It cannot face in both directions at the same time."
