http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9122961/Gay-marriage-is-like-slavery-Catholic-leader-says.html
Essentially, the RCC Cardinal in Britain argues that gay marriage would be leading once again to the downfall of civilization. What's more, he also argues that it would be like legalizing slavery.
Now, anyone care to tell me how that's supposed to work? Because I haven't been able to figure that out myself.

What.
-
How? Seriously how is gay marriage in any way similar to slavery?
Did he just throw darts at a list of "bad things" and randomly chose one to connect to gay marriage?
"Hmm Gay marriage is the same as Hitler... Nah, Godwin... Gay marriage is the same as Dentists, nope doesn't make sense... Gay marriage is the same as Contraception, hmm this one might do, Gay marriage is the same as slavery, oooh looks like we got a winner!"
-
Oh...Keith O'Brien. Trust me, this is tame by his standards. I thought his predecessor Tam Winning was bad, but O'Brien is even worse.
-
So you admit that your God has no problem with same sex marriage?

Is it me or are fundies getting more and more desperate to rationalize opposition to something that causes next to no inconvenience in their personal lives? Like say, oh, making irrational, non-sequitur comparisons?
-
But god's totally ok with slavery. Maybe he's trying to subtley say he supports gay marriage, but that's being really optomistic.
-
No no, we're not actually slaves, we just pretend. :-X

...This reminds me of one of the anti-abortion propaganda papers I got in CCD.
It went on and on about how towards the fall of Rome, people started killing unwanted babies by exposure "because Rome had degenerated morally!!" and implied that this was one of the big reasons why Rome fell.
In other words, all that stuff historians have known for centuries about how infanticide was practiced routinely from ancient Greece well into the Renaissance didn't actually happen. Also, somehow killing a deformed baby == inviting Alaric himself, personally, into your home to burn it and take all your valuables.

Soo, first the Catholic church in this country threaten to close all their orphanages in response to not being allowed to discriminate against same sex couples, now this.
and here I thought the UK was mostly free of this religious bigotry bullshit.
-
Danarth: For the most part it is, but yes, even in Britain, there's religious fuckwittery galore. Nice of them to keep digging themselves deeper.
-
It is fairly tame here compared to the States and some other places....the worst I have ever gotten in Hull is bothered by some Mormons at 8pm while waiting for a bus, and at one point, I had a Jack Chick tract through my door.

Hmm. Not everyone disapproves of O'Brien's ranting.

Considering the Catholic leadership was A-okay with slavery for centuries, I'm further confused by what this Cardinal is trying to say.
-
He means that homosexuality and slavery are both moral evils. He's full of shit, but that's what he meant.

The cardinal seems a bit confused to me.

Thank you. I've been wracking my brain, trying to come up with how he was making the comparison

The UKIP are on his side too. UKIP are a very fringe far right party, sort of like the BNP but more, yet at the same time less, crazy.

There has already been a perfect response (http://scottpaeth.typepad.com/main/2012/03/back-to-religion-and-the-public-square.html) to this fuckery.
In all honesty, my first reaction to any attempt by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to make any kind of moral argument, least of all one involving sexuality, is to want to say “Shut up, old man.” And no Bishop who is honest about the negligence and criminal malfesence [sic] of the Catholic Church around the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of allegations of child molestation and rape around the world over the last half century should expect any other response.

Well, boo-fucking-hoo, Cardy. My long-standing partner and I got married on Feb 29. And guess what, in formerly Catholic Ireland, not one hint of religion is allowed in Civil Marriage. Very refreshing. Even more refreshing is that Bennasty won't bde coming to Ireland for one of your occult rituals. Three guesses why...he won't get the audience, and that would be very embarrassing.
Now all my partner and I have to work out which of us is the slave, I suppose. Perhaps we could alternate week about.
-
Egads, this is painful. Maybe he could also be trying to say that folks like him will be the "slaves," since the poor straight people would have no choice but to put up with the filthy homos and their tyrannical ways.

Well, that only solidifies my disagreement with the good Cardinal.
