sorry to interupt this Dan Savage hate fest where Dan Savage gets made into Gay Hitler who hates transgender people and eats babies and what not but...
the thread title and the graph title seems a bit misleading and maybe I missed where someone else pointed this out.
For one thing I don't see where in the graph where it adjusted for population.
Also the source doesn't seem to agree that race wasn't a significant factor
Indeed it says:
When controlling for all other variables, race (being African-American or Latin@) contributed significantly to one’s likelihood to oppose marriage equality. However, so did age, religiosity, party identification and alignment:
So race was a factor. It just wasn't as significant a factor. (and remember Blacks who voted for Prop 8 didn't do so because they were black. They did so because they were socially conservative CHRISTIANS)
And then we have this....
But an analysis of precinct-level voting data on Prop. 8 from Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco counties, which are home to nearly two-thirds of California's black voters, suggested that African American support for Prop. 8 was more likely about 58 percent.
That support among blacks is still well above the 52 percent Prop. 8 received from all voters in the Nov. 4 election. Much of that can be attributed to the strong religious tradition in the black community, where 57 percent of African American voters attend church at least once a week, compared with 42 percent of Californians overall.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/01/06/BANB154OS1.DTLso yeah religion played a much bigger part then race. But the overwhelming majority of black americans are deeply religious so we can't quite act as if the two are unrelated.
(though as I said long ago when Prop 8 was passed, I think it's more important to focus on the 30% now 42% of black voters that don't seem to hate gay people)
There isn't as much homophobia among the African American community as originally portrayed. Yay! But there is definitely still quite a bit. and part of the problem is that many black americans do not see gay marriage as a civil rights issue.
Not to mention Dan Savage doesn't even believe that Prop 8 was passed because black voters anymore. SSo you're blasting him for a position he doesn't have anymore.
