If I have to listen to my little brother singing "Blurred Lines" because, quoth my mother, "he's not hurting anyone", I'm going to shoot both of them. ("Them" being Robin Thicke and my mother, just for clarification.)

I realize that he is not inflicting physical harm on anyone (his singing voice is actually quite good), but let me explain: "Blurred Lines" promotes rape. It promotes the idea that women are "animals" that may/may not need to be "domesticated". It promotes the idea that verbal consent isn't necessary if you "know {she} want{s} it", with 'it' referring to sex. For those of you not familiar with my brother, he is twelve years old. There is no goddamn reason on earth a twelve-year-old boy needs to hear about how "real men slap they ladies' asses" or someshit. Having the concept of "taking advantage of someone is fine, because 'u kno dey want it!'" exist at all is despicable. The fact that this concept is so common, so accepted, so normal that twelve-year-olds can and will sing about it without authority figures seeing anything wrong is fucking disgusting.
So no, maybe my brother's not hurting anyone right this minute. I hope that, in spite of all the fundie he's exposed to, he grows up to have as many mature, fulfilling relationships as he cares to have. I hope my little brother finds love and gets married and gives me adorable nieces/nephews. But that will never in a healthy way happen if he's taught that women are objects to be used or animals to be tamed. He will never know how to act in a relationship if "Blurred Lines" is his textbook. He will learn to hate women, to use women, to manipulate women, but he won't know what it means to respect a woman. He'll know what it means to be a dude, but he won't know what it means to be a man.
I don't claim to have the Magical Book of Manhood that bestows Real Man cards to those I deem worthy, but I know a thing or two about abusive jackasses. I know that they are intensely lonely, insecure people. I know that they beat others down in an attempt to raise themselves up, or to feel control over something, anything at all. I know that they usually don't see anyone except themselves as being "real", that everyone else is a thing to be used and discarded. I know that the only thing worse than being the kind of person I just described is living with said person. I know that he's my little brother, not my son, and therefore I have very little control over how he is raised.
But that's not the point. My brother deserves better than "Blurred Lines". He deserves a better picture of roughly half the human population than "sex object" vs. "purity object". He deserves a better world than the one he's in.
The day I stop fighting for that world, even if it means being a temporary jackass, will be a cold, cold day in hell.

Got dragged out of bed earlier than I intended for an ear candeling with my sister. We both know it's bullshit (it's candle wax, c'mon), but my mom scheduled it without our consent and wasn't budging. It didn't work last time she dragged me in and didn't work this time.

I was already apprehensive about a procedure where part of the preparations include the words "...in case I start a fire." It wasn't helped by the old idiot jamming the candle ever deeper into my ear until she was centimeters from puncturing my ear drum.

Putting my contacts in. My left eye is just small enough that I can't easily hold it open, so I end up repeatedly trying and failing to get them in because my eyelid flips the contact and folds it as I try to put it in. Even the tiniest flutter of my eyelids will ruin the whole procedure.
