Yeah. How does getting work experience to earn higher wages later put food in your belly and a roof over your head right now?

The internship hoop is a service for employers, a requirement for employees. If there was no internship system, the same number- or more- people would be hired in the same jobs. Businesses would just have a slightly worse metric for deciding who to hire. And, of course, they wouldn't get any free labour.

1) Not all internships are unpaid.

Still lower than minimum wage.

2) You ignore the fact that you are, essentially, working in exchange for college credit in many cases. College credits have monetary value.

It's particularly outrageous that some interns pay for the privilege.

I couldn't even get an internship.  I was "too inexperienced."  Or they wanted me to do completely irrelevant bullshit.

Again, not all of them. And it is still more money than you would make sitting in a college classroom.

It's particularly outrageous that some interns pay for the privilege.

Why? How is it any different from a college class? Shit, one could make an argument that an internship is better than a college class because it gives you experience in the real world with people who actually do the job right now. For example, I'm a broadcasting student and the equipment we learn on (in our basic studio production class) is positively ancient, incredibly basic, and very behind the times. Even our professor wasn't an expert on the equipment, because he had never been on the technical side of the job until he got the professor gig. Real TV stations, on the other hand, tend to have more up-to-date equipment and people who are near experts at using it because they use it every single day. A friend of mine even got her "Advanced Studio Production" requirement waived due to the experience her minimum wage paying internship gave her. My school, at least my department, has a "not approved" list of companies who consistently used interns as either gofers (you're there to learn, not pick up coffee) or replacements for paid workers (you're their to learn as much as you can, not perform one task). There are companies that abuse the shit out of their interns, there are schools that don't keep a careful watch on their internship programs, but that does not mean the system itself is what has to be done away with.

Your earlier point:
Quote
Interns are basically slaves.

Is a MASSIVE overstatement, hyperbole worthy of the most whacked out nutjob. Slaves to not get college credit, slaves do not get paid, slaves do not resume build, slaves have no recourse if they are mistreated, slaves don't go home at the end of the night, slaves don't work for a couple of months and then go someplace else, and most of slaves have no recourse if they are mistreated.

As you've pointed out, students must do internships to get a job, they have no choice. They do work for no wage. If companies want more employees, they can pay for them. They shouldn't be able to exploit students for free. If companies want an employee base with better knowledge than universities can or will provide, they can train them on the job and pay for it.

Now that I think about it, the very existence of unpaid internships leads to an interesting conclusion. It means that the employer is able to dictate the terms of the contract. That means there must be very few firms in that market, i.e., there is some sort of oligopsony. That, in turn, suggests that this outcome is inefficient and a more efficient outcome could be brought about by introducing, e.g., a minimum wage. So really, everybody might in fact be better off if minimum wage laws applied to internships, even though they would reduce employment.
You mad, you lose.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.

Not only, but the Reserve Bank of Australia actively seeks to keep unemployment at around 5% (doesn't count students or those who haven't been able to find work for so long that they've given up looking). Also, as my economics tutor once said, sure we will have full employment of starving over worked slaves.

Still lower than minimum wage.

One can work a part-time job while at uni, which generally pay better than internships. And sure, you starve now to make sure you eat well later, but is that guaranteed. What if you get a crappy internship? Your future potential employer won't give two shits, if you are lucky enough to find a job in this climate there will be hordes of other also hoping to get it.

If you follow that minimum-wage graph picture right the way back to the heart of the organisation (the Institute's President), you get ultra-deluxe limited edition kinds of special. Take, for example, this article, which starts off fairly reasonably (post 9/11 government legislation has been crossing several lines) and then attempts to leap Springfield Gorge on foot:

Or if it's like software the internships aren't even considered for the rest of your life. A year of my life, and no one considers it actual work.

After many years (not counting pre-diagnosis), I can attest to that.  It's a brain thing.  Unfortunately, the brain is still such an enigma.  Maybe someday they can fix my brain where I can be like I was before again without pills.

EDIT:  However thinking about it, considering how much of the brain we've yet to learn about; it may not be in my lifetime. :/
