Kansas to put a sales tax on abortions
« on: March 08, 2012, 07:20:13 pm »
You heard that right.

Kansas is debating putting yet another barrier to women getting safe, legal abortions in the form of a sales tax.  Because...WHY THE FUCK NOT!

Quote
would levy a sales tax on women seeking abortions, including rape victims.

Buried in the 69-page bill being considered by the House Federal and State Affairs Committee are several provisions, in fact, that opponents say would increase taxes on those who seek abortions. The tax sections do not include any exemptions for women who want an abortion after a sexual assault, to end a dangerous ectopic pregnancy or to remove the remains of a fetus following a miscarriage -- the latter of which is defined as an abortion under Kansas law, according to Sarah Gillooly from Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

The committee is likely to continue discussing the bill Thursday afternoon.

Under the proposal, women who end up receiving abortions would not be able to deduct the cost of the abortion as a health care expense if they had not purchased special abortion insurance, Gillooly said.

Last year, Kansas enacted a law removing abortion coverage from health insurance plans in general. Women can purchase a special rider to cover the procedure in advance of a pregnancy.

No exceptions for rape victims either.  So once again, the right is loading the cannons and laying it into women's reproductive rights.  Basically telling them that even if you don't wanna carry a rapists baby to term, you better carry it to term or it'll cost you.

This sounds like something SNL would make up in an abortion skit.

I... wait, what?

I know most states have pretty wildly variant rules regarding what they do and don't apply sales taxes to. Most states don't tax OTC and/or prescription medicine, and some don't tax food. Some don't tax clothing, either, or waive sales tax on clothing at back-to-school and Giftmas time when people are likely to be buying a lot of them.

But seriously, taxing MEDICAL PROCEDURES??

Are you fucking SERIOUS?

If someone was talking about taxing people for their open heart surgery or to remove their kid's tonsils, people would start getting pissed off. If they started doing it for breast augmentation and liposuction, they would probably get angrier even faster. But it's totally okay to do that to women seeking abortions because, psssh, dirty whores.

This isn't shocking given the state of Kansas's track record, and that they have one of the most batshit insane governors.

This is ten different shades of fucked up. Is it even constitutional to put a tax on a medical procedure?

This I wouldn't really mind.

Probably considering the document is over 200 years old and they didn't really think about everything we needed.

And how the heck is removing a miscarriage an abortion? It's already dead!!!!!!
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

A miscarriage itself is a spontaneous abortion.

"Small government" my ass... sales taxes just make it harder for lower-income people to get what they need.

Lemme guess: The tax will be high enough to be an inconvenience to middle- to lower-class women, but completely irrelevant to politician's wife to go to another country to get an abortion (paid on the taxpayer's dime, of course).

A 6.3 percent tax. So, figure it's early in the pregnancy and you'll get stuck with about $500 dollars for the procedure. That'll leave you with an extra $31.50 to cough up. After 16 weeks, you'll probably have to front an extra $44.10 for the $700 dollar procedure. After 20 weeks that price can jump above $1,000 dollars, so you'll have to barf up another $63 dollars minimum.

Every time I see Kansas do stupid shit like this, it makes me even more baffled that we elected Sebelius back in 2003.

So they'll just assume that more expensive abortions = less abortions?

What they think these women just go for abortions like they go for shoes?
