Castro Dynasty to come to an end
« on: February 24, 2013, 09:51:42 pm »

Raul is planning on stepping down after this five-year term AND wants to establish strict two-term limits and age caps to the presidency and other offices.

Still socialist, though.
Still can't think of a signature a year later.

Won't exactly call it "socialist". When you say stuff like that you sound like an uneducated teabagger.

Maybe Raul realized what his brother didn't after all this time: That there should be limits. Kind of wish we'd learn the same lesson for our congress, but then there'd be a lot of people out of a job.

Term limits are a bad idea because they remove the major check on an elected official's actions in their final term (namely, the need to get re-elected). What's needed instead is a way to reduce the advantages of incumbency--for instance, no using any of your prerogatives as a member of Congress as part of your election campaign. You've already got name recognition.

How kind of you.

To quote Raul himself in his speech:

"I was not chosen to be president to restore capitalism to Cuba. I was elected to defend, maintain and continue to perfect socialism, not destroy it."

And the official name for North Korea is the the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Just because he calls it "socialism" doesn't make it so. It's more or less still a one party communist country. This is the kind of shit that comes from a freeper. There is no pure socialist state. Not to mention there are strains of anti-statist socialism about.

The Scandinavia countries have a mixed economy, like we do, but they have a better social safety net, that's why it's considered to be Democratic Socialism. I personally feel Cuba might end up like the fuckhole known as Russia, or go back to how it was like pre-Castro, a Banana Republic great at offering both whores and gambling.

Well... until they cut themselves and bleed bald eagles pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, I doubt the US will be lifting the embargo any time soon.

With the Castros leaving power, and the changes in government, it won't be too long before we see a democratic Cuba.   ;D

Not necessarily. It takes a lot of effort and often a lot of time to change the government; Cuba will have been under the control of a single man or his younger brother for 59 years by the time Raul steps down. I'll be going on 30 by the time Raul Castro leaves office, and there's a lot of members here that are already 10 to 30 years older than me. I'd be surprised if Cuba becomes truly democratic within the lifetime of some of our members, without corruption and infighting leading to manipulation of the polls and voter intimidation.

Say what you will about American government, but there's no outright manipulation of the numbers and ballot stuffing to ensure that select candidates gain power, or goons beating anyone who doesn't vote for a certain politician. I can see Cuba having a lot of difficulty acclimating to a full democratic system, like many countries around South America and Africa.

Though I could imagine if things get too out of hand I could see America stepping in since they are in our backyard and them tossing missiles at us is a big no.
