Newly Discovered Gospel Fragment Says Jesus Was Married

A Harvard historian has identified a faded, fourth-century scrap of papyrus she calls "The Gospel of Jesus's Wife." One line of the torn fragment of text purportedly reads: "Jesus said to them, 'My wife …'" The following line states, "she will be able to be my disciple."
 
The finding was announced to the public today (Sept. 18) by Karen King, a historian of early Christianity, author of several books about new Gospel discoveries and the Hollis professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School. King first examined the privately owned fragment in 2011, and has since been studying it with the help of a small group of scholars.
 
According to the New York Times, King and her collaborators have concluded that the business card-size fragment is not a forgery, and she is presenting the discovery today at a meeting of International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

Any bets on how long it takes for fundies to condemn her to Hell?

This seems a bit shady.

I'm not an archeologist and I'll wait for people who actually know about these things to decide if it is real or not, but my money is on this being a hoax.

Doesn't even need to be a hoax, just an old splinter sect. I'd lay decent odds that somewhere out there someone wrote Jesus/John fiction at one point in the first millennium, just because we find it doesn't make it canon.

Yeah these things tend to be hoaxes.  Like this guy "happened" to just find a rare artifiact in Israel (he was latter arrested for forgery)

Isn't also funny that the piece they found is really sort of obvious about its content? I mean, even in the four accepted Gospels, it's not like every line is, "JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD AND HAS MAGICAL POWERS." That's just the general message of the text. Only finding references to his wife out a presumably larger document? Yeahno.

The decision about whether this fragment of text (and whatever source text from which it came) is canonical is largely the decision of each denomination.  Remember that the Catholics, Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental/African Orthodox churches all consider different sets of books to be "official".

That and IIRC it's Coptic, which is viewed as heretical by other forms of Christinity.

Fourth century? I'm sure that guy who wrote that scrap wrote it after a nice dinner with the long deceased Jesus and his wife...
On the other hand, it's not like the churches condemn things just because they have absolutly no relevance as they were written by someone who didn't even live in that time....

There's pretty much already evidence of Jesus being married in the Bible anyways, but whether one sees it as such depends on how much emphasis one places on the traditions of Jewish marriage ceremonies. ;D

Jesus turning water to wine at a ceremony in which the groom is expected to provide the refreshments for the guests?  Yyyyeaaah.
