The failure and corruption of gatekeepers as a symptom of a much greater problem which has been publicly demonstrated by the Linux community. Gatekeepers are persons of power within a cultural structure who can shut down and shut out ‘the trash’, whether they be individuals or groups, of a community. They can effectively silence messages deemed harmful and isolate the trash from resources.
I will exemplify:
Elias Bizannes, a TechCrunch judge was corrupt. He manipulated the submission system so that his buddies can push their sexually hostile content. Then tried to justify it with derp comments which reinforced a stereotype of Australians.
The other three judges and management failed as gatekeepers because they had the ability to shut down Elias Bizannes as they knew and expressed anger over the content he judged as acceptable. They were inherently part of the screening process, they failed to act and allowed it.
To trace the cause of a problem one must find the initiating action. The creation of Titstare was the first action, the following action was Elias Bizannes abusing his position as a judge to allow Titstare and the third action was the failure of the other three judges and management. The sad truth of the matter is that the members of Linux Community present at the TechCrunch even were more responsible for this problem that the AOL backed corporate suites because that initiated and were part of allowing such to occur.
Meet Nicu Buculei, responsible for the
Fedora Upskirt Incident and an example that the same misogynistic same behavior is present and tolerated in the communities’ specific to any given Linux distro.
1) Nicu Buculei is a corrupt gatekeeper, he used his position to post sexual harassment believing it to be acceptable. Given the amount of users who rushed to his defense verses those who opposed him, it was deemed acceptable.
2) Notice that I used a picture of him with his child. This is outside the scope of the stereotype that the trash of the Linux Community are just sexually and socially immature males.
He is mature, he is married and thus had prolonged social and sexual contact with women. Despite all of this he still targeted women on a public bus and refused to take down the picture he uploaded thus he is still misogynistic.
3) Other gatekeepers on Fedora Planet either failed to act or were corrupt as it is still syndicated,
one even defended him publically! No one forced them to do so, they willing chose to do so. Private messages are not good enough, cover-ups do not solve the problem. Anyone who posts sexual harassment needs to be thrown the fuck out. Such should be publically stated policy as it will dispel the stereotype mentioned above and improve the community.
Original long fugly post:
Hostile, sexualized environment anyone? Behold the fail that is the TechCrunch Disrupt 2013 startup conference. Fun fact, this was done before to an audience who paid for the opportunity to watch. For extra creepiness, the audience included a nine year old child.
The two idiots behind this are Jethro Batts (aka Jethro Clayton or Jethro Iggulden) and David Boulton:
But wait, there is an even bigger shithead behind this!
Meet Elias Bizannes,
one of the four judges for the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon! Here is why this all happened, with source too!
They gave up and in the early hours of the next morning and changed it to Tit stare, because they thought they needed to do something to get the free tickets and thought they might as well have fun.
The submission system was broken and they couldn't submit their app. Geoff McQueen (the Aussie host) minutes before the event started told them bad luck -- I was there when Geoff walked off and the (unbeknownst to me) Tit stare team member who I had met a few days earlier for the first time asked me if I could help. I said sorry man, they are tight today on scheduling.
Hey good thing this was an isolateBAHAHAHAHAAHAAAA this is the tech industry! The Masturbation app was three previous presentation ago (presentation 66, titstare was 68b).
Back to the
ddduuuurrrrr why peoplez offended by this hhhhuuurrrr:
“I was also there backstage when the female judges lost their shit where I had to calm them and the TechCrunch management were fuming and worried someone else would do this unprecedented thing that day.”
"Step away from the objectification of a female body part, and you will see it was an attempt at comedy. The words, the timing — it was an attempt on comedy, not an attack on women"
"the guys found a nerve (glass ceiling, women in tech, general male sleaze bag behavior) and smashed it with a hammer with their political incorrectness in a culture where if you fart you've caused global warming."
Got to keep those stereotypes about Australians going, amirite?
“It was juvenile, it was rude. But that's what some comedy is: saying the things people don't say and that are politically incorrect. The last fact a major cultural difference between Australia and California: Australian culture, like British culture (hello page 3 girls) is very male dominated and crude -- we grow up politically incorrect and tolerate things more than our American friends. I offend an American every day here in San Francisco, and usually it's just me trying to order my lunch. I'm not saying that's right, but it's why you will find more Aussies less offended by this.”[/URL]
The best is saved for last, it’s just like Iraq!
I'm not defending the guys: they screwed up and deserve the consequences. It will serve as a lesson in how to respect women, which all us men need to learn as we don't realise sometimes, unintentionally, our words and actions make women uncomfortable (which I learned due to my sisters, but guys with brothers miss out on as an education). But if anyone in the Australian tech industry chooses to ostracize them because they fail to actually reflect on that they did and how the press is manipulating this story to be worse then it actually is, then I'm disappointed in you. Why? Because you're just as bad as the majority of American's who thought Al-Qaeda was in Iraq and hence one of the stupidest wars of recent memory, all thanks to taking things hook line and sinker due to the media.
Do you want to know what this reminds me of?
The Fedora Upskirt Incident caused by Nicu Buculei!Yet another creepy guy abusing the functionality of a phone to sexualize and harass women for attention. Fun fact, one of the pics he took is still syndicated by fedora planet but no longer hosted there. AKA Major reason #1 why I hate the culture and community that pertains to Linux.
