Back in mah day, we didn't have this digital distribution nonsense.  When a PC game came out, we camped outside stores just like any other gamer.  We camped out in the rain, the freezing wind, the volcanic eruptions, the death star attacks, the kaiju rampages, the burnt hot dogs, and the burning sun.  AND WE LIKED IT!

Just played through Gone Home. Not sure if it was worth the money, but I did enjoy the 90s nostalgia and learning about the family. The storyline was all right -- feels a bit cliche in 2014, but definitely appropriate for 1995.

I actually left my house to buy a copy, since it would save me money compared to buying it off steam. although I wish I stayed inside, the kaiju rampages were especially bad yesterday.

A war between Magic and Technology; Arcanists vs. Engineers.  You've got several servers each hosting their own copies of the war world, but each of them has several playable areas setup on linked sub-servers.  A never-ending war in a fully-destructible (and rebuildable) world where actions in one area can have large-scale changes on the face of the war as a whole, determining the availability of certain upgrades and supplies, and their cost.

While it'll have an interface similar to a traditional third-person shooter, it'll also have many elements of real-time strategy.  Commanders can either research new technology or magic, depending on the side, or even research and utilize the other side's abilities using supplies soldiers can steal during and after battle.  You can even have defectors who can offer up their knowledge to advance the abilities of the side to which they defected.

It'd start out with a relatively modern game world in terms of structure and technology.  However, as the game progresses and research is done, either side can reach further into their own respective abilities, gaining deepening pools of magical might and technological prowess.  From teleportation to astral projection; from nanotechnology to magical constructs.

Critical installations, such as resource extraction points and command headquarters, must be defended.  Each side will eventually be able to create an array of terrifying automated defenses, but they'll be very expensive and time-consuming to make and maintain.  As for an explanation of respawning mechanics...perhaps something involving an elder god of chaos bringing the soldiers back to life for its amusement.

Finally finished my first playthrough of Dark Souls II. overall, I'd say it is certainly a worthy sequel. They kinda linearized the area progression, and the changes to the stat system was kinda unnecessary, but over than those problems I loved the game.
