^Five's one of my top faves.  Actually I think it's why I like Eleven so much is some aspects of him remind me of Five.  Both bring more of a "humany-wumany" factor to the Doctor.

I like Four a lot, and I saw quite a bit of that in Eleven too, and Ten. 

As an aside, to me, every incarnation is unique, but also reminiscent of a past one or two since his core personality traits shift in dominance, but never really disappear.  The Doctor is still The Doctor no matter what face he has.  Essentially the same person.

Evidently way later in life he gets to where he can pick out how he wants to look al la Romana trying out different looks before settling on her Princess Astra form.  Regeneration becomes less of a lottery if you figure out how to do it...

The Corsair chose a female form. So. It is possible. As well as you become what you need at the time. Hence the War Doctor.

Oh okay.  I saw the War Doc regen into 9.   That just opens a new can of worms... what exact incarnation are we on?  Is 11 really 12, and will 12 be 13, or was the War Doctor an anomaly, pretty much like the Valeyard described in Classic Who?

The Doctor is on his last regeneration, and will somehow gain the ability to regenerate at the end of the Christmas special

It was in Let's Kill Hitler. She tried to assassinate him, he talked her into a heel-face turn, and she gave up the rest of her remaining regenerations to save his life.

Has the Doctor ever said he only has 12/13 regenerations? From what I understand, that was a limit the Time Lords imposed on themselves, and the Doctor said in the Sarah Jane Adventures that he has something like 503 left.

Then again, one could easily turn around and say that nothing straight from the primary show itself is canon.  That's likely not the case, but still, the possibility is there.

The potions given to him by the ladies that helped him become the War Doctor held the energy for one full regeneration, and thus didn't use up any of his personal regenerative cycles.  There's also the regenerations River gave to him, as well as whatever the hell The Watcher was back when Four regenerated.  We've also got the Valeyard to consider; having a piece of what amounts to one's own soul split off might have some repercussions on one's regenerative capacity, be it positive or negative.

Of course, there's also the whole "The Doctor lies" thing, with 12 lives being more along the lines of Time Lord law, instead of an actual, physical limit.  Plus, I doubt the TARDIS would so willingly let her man go, not without one hell of a fight trying to save him.

Also, I've got another guess regarding what happened between a certain two characters at The End of Time...

The Master, shortly after being shunted back into the Time War, killed Rassilon and stole whatever regenerative power he had left to keep himself alive and restore his body to full, working order.  The Master's a survivor, and madness or not, I can't see him choosing to let RASSILON, of all people, live after what he did, and if there's a way to turn the death of Rassilon to his long-term advantage, I think he'd take it.  Madness doesn't just blink away in a moment, it takes a good, long while to be rid of, even in the best of circumstances.

Well I just watched the Day of the Doctor and it was pretty good. My only complaint is this:

They should have had ninth Doctor have more than a cameo. Since they had a major part on having the war Doctor see what kind of person his decision made him it would have been fitting to see Nine as well. After all, Nine was what he became right after the war and he was the one most traumatized by the one most traumatized by the loss of his people, Doc number ten seemed to take his place as being full of regret while Eleven was living in denial.

Well, two things, refusing to reprise the role is nothing out of the ordinary for Eccleston. Until this year, he was outright against it. The fact that he even CONSIDERED returning is saying something. Also, I'm willing to bet that the War Doctor was meant to be Eccleston as much of his dialogue sounded like it would have fit just as well out of Eccleston.

Matt Smith is playing the 13th Doctor which is the final one according to the 12 regeneration rule.  Why is Smith 13?  Well we add in John Hurt as one making Smith 12 and than must remember that David Tennant used an extra regeneration in Journey's End and we have an extra Doctor in an alternate universe. 

Take that with the deleted scene from that episode in which Rose get other Doctor are given a piece of TARDIS coral to grow there own and the current Doctor could really die at Trenzalore.

Day of the Doctor was everything I'd hoped it would be. <3
