The effect of this one has a very interesting cause! Essentially the rotations fatigue specific neurons, causing them to become less sensitive to input and their paired opposites to become extra sensitive. When you look away, the disparity in sensitivity causes the wobbly appearance of stuff. It's kind of the optical equivalent of playing tug-of-war when the entire other side lets go.
