The first I idea I had for a novel was a horror novel about a weak, underachieving but fundamnetally good man who (somehow, never got round to figuring out the details) gains the ability to take over other people's bodies when he sleeps and soon becomes corrupted by this power and uses it to commit acts of voyerism, rape, murder, robberies, acts of revenge and generally turn into the most evil, reprehensible person alive.  All without consequence to him as the pople whose bodies he posesses are the ones who go to prison for the crimes.  You go from feeling sorry for him to hating him in the space of 400 pages.

What does that say about me lol?

Edit: BTW this was about 10 years ago I had that idea, before Breaking Bad came along with it's "protagonist becomes the antagonist" thing.  I also had an idea ages ago  for a TV show about a homocide detective who solves a bunch of murders but you find out at the end he's actually a serial killer who killed all the vicitims of the cases he worked and has been forging evidence etc to send innocent people to prison for the murders he's been commiting.  But then Dexter came along with an annoyingly similar-ish premise that made it look like I ripped of that show's idea and just changed a few things.  Even worse is both Breaking Bad and Dexter are awesome shows that are far better than anything I could create.  Bastards lol.

Yes I guess that would happen; people often seem to idolise characters you're supposed to hate.  I don't know how you make a character where that wouldn't happen.  Probably takes more writing skill than I posses.

The only way to stop that is to make them purely vile, like kicking kittens and stuff, and even then, people will just call you a hack for that. People will like villains. The only other recourse is to make them ugly.
