Before Googling I know that there was this scifi-book with a weird zone that people went to study. I remember it being mentioned as an influence to the Stalker games and that using a lugnut tied to a string was an easy way to check if you were about to enter a zone where the laws of physics were messed up. I never got to read the book (and don't remember the name) even though it comes up every now and then.

I remember one Yankee talking about how a mirror fell off a wall during the night and he was already holding a loaded shotgun in his hand and pointing it at suspicious looking shadows before he woke up properly. Apparently his wife thought it was funny and he himself was proud of having such an automatic response but to me it sounded like someone who will shoot people by accident when he gets spooked.
