Title: What sex acts are considered off limits for Christian couples?
Post by: rtvc2012 on May 04, 2013, 04:48:11 pm
Is it pretty much everything not missionary-position-with-lights-off-for-procreation-only, or does anything go as long as a ring is on the finger?

It depends on the sect. Some are really liberal and think premarital sex and sexual activity is okay as long as you're being safe about it and it's with someone you love--others think it's only okay in marriage but you can do whatever you want there--some think anything except procreative sex with the lights off, the man on top, and the woman thinking of England is a one-way ticket to hell.

I'd add something more, but Cait covered it.

There were even groups that banned ALL sex, even between married couples.

There have also been cult groups that don't care if you're married or not (or even if you're actually adults), so long as it's procreative and you make lots and lots of babies.

One of them was the Shakers, right? From what I remember, there are only three members left because it's illegal for religious organizations to adopt orphans now, so anyone who joins the Shakers has to be an adult entering of their own free will. Clearly celibacy just isn't an engaging idea for a lot of people.

Heaven's Gate also tried to get male members (ha!) to undergo castration, though they didn't require it and the whole idea lacks any appeal, so only a small handful of the cult members actually DID do it. But that had less to do with controlling how they did and didn't have sex and more to do with the cult leader's (I can't remember his name) struggling with homosexual urges and coming to the conclusion that somehow it would make things better if he lopped his own balls off and tried to get the other men to do the same.

But cults like that are few, far between, and extreme.

No, the religious cult that famously committed mass suicide in 1997 when the Hale-Bopp comet came by Earth. The leader, Marshall Applewhite, convinced everybody that there was an alien space ship behind the comet and it would whisk them away to heaven or a better world or some shit that I don't remember specifically--but for whatever reason, they needed to be dead to be rescued by this comet. So most of the remaining members (there weren't many left at that point) allegedly voluntarily poisoned themselves.

Oh.  I remember that now.  Thanks for reminding me.

If you can't see an application of rule 34 in that then you have no imagination!

A rough rule of thumb here is, if it's pleasurable it's sinful.

unless it produces lots of children or is between priests and altar boys.

Right, which makes me question: If God supposedly designed us and hates non-procreative sex, wouldn't he have made it so that we have painful sex by implementing some sort of thing like barbs on penises a la cats?

Because making babies is supposed to feel good, and non-baby-making sex is a test of our faith.

I was raised Jehovah's Witness. They basically forbid premarital sex, masturbation, oral sex, anal sex, and "unnatural" sex acts (i.e. BDSM/homosexuality/polyamory etc), and even have had a history of announcing from the platform that you could lose "privileges" if it became known you participated in "unnatural" positions like doggie style within your own marriage.

I wish to god I was making this up.

Judaism actually takes a rather different tack. Sex is as much to reinforce the bonds of marriage as it is to produce children. So while extramarital sex is still forbidden, married couples can do whatever they hell they want in their own bedroom.

If you want to find a verse in the Bible that could conceivably be interpreted to ban something, all you need is a minimum of creativity and the willingness to slog your way through.

Off the top of my head, you could probably reinterpret some of the verses about sodomy to be about any sexual practice except for whichever you consider appropriate, or claim something about treating your body as a temple.

I can't think of anything less "unnatural" than doggy style.

I once read a guide to sex for Christians that said pretty anything goes as long as it's between a man and a woman who are married to each other. However, if you wanted to roleplay, the "characters" you played had to be married. The article gave the example of a scenario in which a pirate ravishes a maiden on a desert island, and later weds her (thus making the roleplaying scenario legitimate in the eyes of God or whatever).

After some Googling I found the article (http://site.themarriagebed.com/sexuality/sexual-play/whats-okay-whats-not) I was talking about. This is an interesting interpretation of Biblical law because the author states that homosexuality and premarital sex are wrong, but watersports and adult nursing aren't.

Yeahhhhh... they tend to be really... involved with other people's sex lives. To a truly creepy degree. Along with sex being evil and life destroying until your magical marriage ceremony makes it all OK. As long as you don't do anything fun....
