Title: The WBC crew are coming to my old high school
Post by: DiscoBerry on January 27, 2012, 02:22:07 pm
Quote
The group plans to picket from 7:50 to 8:20 a.m. because -- hold on while I jam my head up my ass so as to properly quote from the press release -- "We will give your children the chance to see what truth looks like, the face of what they were entitled to have from every adult that ever touched their lives! You brutish teachers and hateful parents have broken the moral compass of this generation, teaching rebellion with everything you say and do."

Christ, what an asshole.

What did CHS do to receive such an honor?

Presumably, this is a retaliatory visit. Back in March 2011 the CHS Equality Club brought Nathan Phelps, the estranged son of WBC's chief asshole, Fred Phelps, to speak to students and parents about growing up Phelps. Nathan Phelps' address is available on YouTube in five sections, and it's an interesting one. Phelps discusses his father's ideas on child rearing (if you guessed it involves lots of Bibles and physical discipline, you're correct), the insular beliefs of the sect (they're not about conversion because they're the only ones who are "saved") and the total strength of the congregation (about 60 people, most of 'em with the last name Phelps). It's an interesting, informative and frank discussion about how adhering to blind hatred eventually makes you blind to everything that actually makes life worth living. You can see why that asshole Fred Phelps would hate it.

Damn.  I hope they're thoroughly booed.  Of course they'll take it as persecution, but what DON'T they take as an opportunity to reinforce they're holier-than-though bullshit?

*SIGH*

When is that asshole, old Freddy-boy, going to fricking DIE? I just might hop on a plane from Canada just to dance on his grave when he DOES... and I don't celebrate someone's death lightly...

Won't matter, the kids who stayed are more asshole-ish than he is. And his grandkids seem to be heading down the same path.

I could be wrong, but this one may have crossed the "don't tell people to do illegal things" line.

If it hasn't, I second the motion.

I personally think it should be a clause in any law. Anyone as much of a total prick as phelps and his cult are should be shot on sight

Also that site linked in the OP, christ the comments suck

Yeah, an impromptu LGBT Pride parade would be much more funny/effective.

Depending on where you are, I might have to get involved in this issue.

That's not inciting violence at all.

I may not like the Phelps, but I'd be more interested in getting them busted for child abuse more than anything.  That said, I wouldn't mind doing an impromptu trolling Woodstock-style.

In Ann Arbor, they beat him by simply doing donations for every minute they stuck around for a local GLBT group.

I say no to paragraph 1, as it means they'd have been subjecting a child to abuse. I don't want to think about that. As for paragraph 2... LOL.

Play it on a boombox near where they protest.

We know he abuses children, he just needs to be busted for it.

When they need to bring out the cops to protect the hate group... well, that says something about how much people hate their "message", now doesn't it?

As mentioned earlier, that they abuse children is already a given. They badly need to be taken down for that.

No. That might help do the unthinkable and render them some sympathy in certain quarters. You’ve got to stay classy.

Here's an idea. Hold a fundraiser among the attendees and student body/staff of the protest. Donate it to a local LGBT chapter or any other related cause, and make sure you label it clearly as such. Its been done before, so why not do it here?

If I had the money I would, as publicly as possible, declare that for every minute the WBC spends picketing somewhere, I would donate $1 to the Equal Rights Campaign. Because seriously, they are the worst. They are the people that fundies turn to and say "hey, we're not that crazy!" And they have a right to. These people are fucking horrible people, and everything they do or say is designed to inspire nothing but anger and rage. Well, they do, despite the fact I just know they're egging us on. They're just too depraved.

Then suggest it to others.  Suggest it to your school.  See if there's someone else who can do it.

With signs up saying "All gay men think Fred Phelps is sexy as hell!" ;D

Sorry, its called the Phelps-a-thon, and there's already a page here.
http://phelps-a-thon.com/clayton/

Still you can contact them and see if anyone is on-site doing a tie-in campaign, or if you can do it yourself.

I may consider contributing. How long does a Phelps protest usually last, though? Gotta know what I can afford.

30 minutes for this one. They're usually there for designated times because they tend to hit multiple locations in one day. And Shirley Phelps puts the times on their website, so they're usually in a location for between 30 minutes to 3 hours (as was the one they did in Des Moines post-gay marriage decision).

I imagine permits and how long the TV Cameras stick around determines the time as well

Alternatively, ask the Patriot Riders if they could come in and do a motorcycle safety demonstration at the same time.

Yeah, actually, I caught that on the Phelps-a-thon site shortly after I posted. Meant to edit, but I got a little distracted.

How likely are they to run over their time?

I wonder if Fred Phelps has a midlde name and if it happens to start with an 'A'? Then you could make a protest sign playing on the fact his name would spell "FAP"...
