Title: Women Without Make-Up... Gasp!
Post by: e13 on May 09, 2012, 02:40:44 pm
Here's an article pointing out the idiocy of how when a woman is in a position of fame or power, 90% of the media is about "how she looks" or "what was she wearing."

Click Me! (http://jezebel.com/5908712/what-were-really-talking-about-when-we-talk-about-hillary-clinton-without-makeup?utm_campaign=socialflow_jezebel_facebook&utm_source=jezebel_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow)

Toughts?

Your link is borked.

That said, Cait actually posted a YouTube video on this topic a little while ago.

This sort of thing is just as bad as would be outrage about a woman not wearing a burqa.

Quote
On Monday, the front and center picture on Drudge Report was Hillary Clinton's bespectacled face without makeup, because apparently we've talked about every other possible topic in the world. The picture of Clinton's face, which Matt Drudge helpfully tagged "Au Naturel," features the smiling Secretary of State's countenance naked but for black framed glasses and red lipstick.

Quote
Fox echoed Matt Drudge's triumphant smugness, asking in their headline if Hillary "forgot" her makeup, as though she'd been caught peeing her pants onstage or flashing her crotch at paparazzi as she got out of a limo.

Putting politics on the same level as vapid celebrity gossip. You stay classy, FOX and Drudge.

And is this literally the worst the right-wing noise machine can come up with? A woman without makeup, the horror! This only goes to show how they can't find anything to legitimately fault this administration for (except not being progressive enough, and you know they sure as hell wouldn't do that). Personally, I think Mrs. Clinton looks better without it, anyways. Still, if she had her "flaws" fixed, these people would gossip about it and shame her for having plastic surgery, just like they do Nancy Pelosi.

These women are trying to run a country, not competing on America's Next Top Model. Who cares what they put on their faces?

Just wondering, do male politicians wear makeup? I would expect all celebrities to in public.

^^ Let's be fair. There are just as many women out there who are perpetuating this kind of shallow, sexist crap. It's a societal flaw, not just an issue caused by men.

As for the article:

I can't count the number of times I've been engaged with a debate with someone online, only to have them say something to the effect of, "I bet you're fat/ugly!" when they find out that I'm female. It really does seem to be a perceived trump card for debating against women.

Then we have images like this:

(Funny how all of the conservative shots are publicity stills, with professionally applied makeup, air-brushing, etc., while the liberal ones are candid shots of women making awkward faces -- but that's beside the point.)

Fine I'll behave myself.

Edit: Why is Bo Derek on the conservative side? She was a porn star and voted for Obama... nevermind.

Cool story, bro.

Edit: We can, but let's not.

Edit 2: Seriously, dude, you're completely missing the point. And it's not any better when you do it to men.

Funny.

Liberal commentator Imogen Lloyd Webber puts them all to shame.

Why, is she smarter? Cuz Clinton and Pelosi managed to hold the highest political positions for a woman in America.

She's British, so does Liberal mean libertarian?

The feminism thing is interesting and important, but I can't think of anything interesting to say. Other than to add that my Prime Minister, who is a red-headed female with a mildly unusual accent, has for that reason alone suffered severe criticism. Notably from several female 'journalists'.

I will note that men get a similar, though not equivalent, set of standards applied to them by the media. "Would you like a beer with them" (your answer should be "who's paying", but I digress). It doesn't matter who looks better or who is a nicer person. It doesn't matter that your head of state is an asshole in private, like Kevin Rudd. The only thing that matters is policy. Any journalist who ever criticises a politician for anything other than policy does not deserve the name.

In the present media climate, it's probably bad practice to even mention anything other than policy.

That image macro always struck me as more honest than it intended, as it essentially proclaims that conservatives find no value in women outside of their physical appearance.

"Haha, look at these liberals letting women into power due to their qualifications rather than their looks!"

I think part of the problem is that society in general is easily distracted, and in constant need of some new source of entertainment. Policy issues are boring, people don't want to know that some measure is trying to go through the house and will probably be blocked by such and such. It requires too much of that evil thinking thing. On the other hand meaningless articles about makeup and who you would drink beer with and who is sleeping with who gives people that instant gratification and entertainment they desire. We are a shallow society, becoming more and more shallow with each decade.

I like how they purposefully found the worst pictures they could of the liberal side.

Who gives a shit whether or not Clinton wore makeup. It's just republicans trying to make a shitstorm over nothing. Also when did Ann Coulter become the standard for beauty??

To be honest out of that list the only one I'd give them is Bo Derek, and I think that picture may well be 20 years old at this point.

Coulter as good looking is something I've never been able to process, but I've heard the claim repeated.

Apperantly a woman isn't worth anything unless she spends all morning in front of her mirror putting on ungodly amounts of makeup.

I'm with the original article. Who gives a fuck if Hillary isn't wearing make up. As long as her policy is good, anyway I've always been a big Hillary Clinton fan.

But then again I have to say I think all those conservative women are attractive. However I wouldn't want them running the country. Nor would I want to have dinner with them unless they were sucking my dick under the table. I would however have dinner with the Democrat women, (apart from Andrea Dworkins - because she and her writing scare the piss out of me).

I've always found that people will pettily cling on to stuff like this when it comes to politics.  A very good example of this is when Obama got that burger a few years back and some of Fox's correspondents were chastising him over his choice of condiments.  I still remember one of them saying something along the lines of "A real man doesn't get honey mustard on a burger."

Cracked mentioned this kind of thing in a recent article (in fact, they referenced the Obama hamburger drama): http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-ways-to-spot-b.s.-political-story-in-under-10-seconds/

Quote
A variation of this is the stories of embarrassing yet totally inconsequential "scandals" about a candidate that involve nothing illegal or improper, but supposedly define the candidate as a person.

Hey, did you know that Barack Obama is an out-of-touch elitist because he puts fancy Dijon mustard on his hamburgers? Did you know that Mitt Romney is an insane sociopath because he once made his pet dog ride on top of his car 26 years ago? Did you know John Kerry can't relate to the average person because he puts Swiss cheese on his Philly cheese steaks? Did you know that George W. Bush hates foreigners so much that he wiped his hand after shaking hands with a Haitian? Did you know that all of this is petty schoolyard bullshit that wastes valuable time and energy that you'll never get back?
