Title: Coronal mass ejection
Post by: Da Rat Bastid on January 23, 2012, 04:32:51 pm
According to the scientific community, there was a big solar flare that happened earlier today, and the biggest impact on Earth's magnetic field is supposed to happen tomorrow morning.  I'm wondering, will this event be big enough that we should shut off our computers and other electronic gadgetry until later tomorrow, in case the power grids go all wonky?  :-\

Haven't heard anything about this one.  There was one last week that hit Saturday night.  I don't know if that is the same one you're talking about or if this is a different one.  I'll see what I can find.

Okay, I did find that this is a different one that erupted Sunday morning and should hit sometime early Tuesday morning (9AM EST.)  It's the largest since 2005, but I can't find any warnings other than airplanes normally flying northern routes ill be rerouted to avoid electronic interference.  You should be okay, but if you'd feel saver, go ahead and shut 'er down tonight.

If it were big enough to fuck the POWER GRID it'd fuck you, too. Don't get worried about it. Worst we'll see is finicky satellite communications.

My computer came alive and tried to eat me during the last flare. Better turn everything off just in case.

I, on the other hand, tried to eat my computer during the last ejection. It was weird.

I've heard of cyber-sex before but damn.... *chuckles at Mrs. Antichrist*

Huh.  So far, nothing happened around here.  I guess Wyoming is too far south, and/or the storm was less intense than I'd thought. *shrugs*

I didn't know whether to exalt or smite so I went with my gut and smote for that.

Seriously, the atmosphere protects us from this shit.

Once my dad said that solar flares caused the Japanese earthquake.

Your dad sounds like a very scientifically educated man.

lol inorite

When he talked to an actual nuclear physicist in the neighborhood on the matter, he dismissed everything he said because apparently the scientific community "has an agenda." (The nuclear physicist happened to be from Japan.)

Actually, that's not necessarily the case (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859).  If a solar storm of similar intensity to that of the Carrington Event were to hit Earth nowadays, would our power grids be able to withstand its effects?  If not, what percentage of people in developed nations would be able to survive "unplugged" for a year or longer while the various eggheads scramble to make the tools to make the tools to make the tools necessary to give us ubiquitous electricity once again? *illustrates the point by pretending to count on his fingers*

Once my dad said that solar flares caused the Japanese earthquake.

What was his basis for this?

I have no idea, but I do know he is a fan of Alex Jones.

Still, an eighth-grader can point out how it's wrong.

I keep reading the topic title as "mass erection".
