I was just coming here to post this story. Personally I am hoping that episode 7 will be about the Thrawn trilogy. (But that is because I am a Timothy Zahn fanboy.)

At the moment it is impossible to say how good/bad the new movie(s) will be, but the thing about Star wars and other such fictions which have spread to books, movies, games, series and cooking appliances is that the quality will vary greatly. (And I do mean that this applies to Star trek and Warhammer and Warcraft and more.)

Sometimes the new product is just trying to cash some few extra pennies out of die hard fans, sometimes it really is good. The problem is the unreliability which increases proportionally with the money used in the project. They can hire an inexperienced writer to make a new EU book, print a small first edition to see if the fans like it (Some fools will buy it anyway so the risk is low) if really is a good book, true to the background and loved by all they can print more. But when they are spending millions to make a new movie... You would think that they would make sure this is a good movie to improve their odds of getting their investment back, but it is more likely that they play it safe and make a generic, hollywood scifi with as much executive meddling as possible. I bet there is already a producer demanding that they add something like Jar Jar to the movie to attract the kids. Maybe just treat the movie as a huge commercial to the new product lines.

Hmm... I keep sounding more pessimistic the longer I type... Still, it might be good and it really is too early to say how it will turn out. (Getting some restrictions to Lucas would be a good start.)

Agree with the comments about the Thrawn Trilogy. Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command are practically episodes 7, 8, and 9 already, and I think a film adaptation would do them well.

I can't wait for this, though depending on how far ahead they go, I'm wondering if this will negate any of the books.

I'm doubting that Ford will return though Fisher and Hamill probably would.

Oh, and I don't think they'd do the Thrawn Trilogy unless they use new actors.  As much as I'd like to see that, it's supposed to take place 5 years after ROTJ.

I frankly couldn't care less how terrible the movie is as long as Jar Jar Binks dies in a horrible and slow manner.

I slept on it, and I won't mind an Thrawn trilogy, if done right, and as I said the best route would be an animated film, but I want something Palpatine related in return. Fuck the Palpatine haters.

So you want to see a movie where Palpatine fucks Palpatine-haters? Lots of energetic angry-sex and wrinkly-old-man-on-nerd-action?

Yeah we need the NSFW section back.

An animated film, possibly CGI, and with as many of the original actors doing the voice acting as possible. Mark Hamill would probably go for it.

Although as I recall, Dark Empire comes next after the Thrawn trilogy, so worry not Palpatine fans.

The way I see it, it may just go the way the Marvel purchase did: minimal intervention in the actual workings, but massive funding whenever something big comes up.

At least, I hope so. Disney's one of the few studios nowadays who prides themselves on consistent quality, running on the theory that good, expensive films will make more money than a slew of cheap, easy crap. They didn't even give Joss Whedon a budget for The Avengers- they told him to just make it and let them know the total price when he was done. It's been paying off, and in the age of piracy that's a good sign for them to keep doing it.

I've long held that Jar Jar was an agent of Palpatine from the start. Not sure if he's actually a willing conspirator, or just being controlled by Palpy, but the point is, Jar Jar was always a bad guy.

This is why, if someone was going to purchase the rights to Star Wars, Disney was probably the best choice. They seem more dedicated to consistency of quality and vision in their film franchises than any other big movie company. I'm a little worried that they'll Disneyfy it too much, but then again, Pirates of the Caribean showed that they can do big budget action adventure that's family friendly without being too dumbed down, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Really, they should stop shooting movies and start shooting "actors" like Ewan MacGregor.  He was worse than JarJar.

Well according to stories such as this...

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/star-wars-goes-disney-extent-231113047.html

Lucas has hinted that the next movie will be set decades after Return of the Jedi, and will continue to follow the story of Luke.

I for one have never been a fan of the EU so I hope it is a new story.
