Title: Underrated/underexposed music thread
Post by: Fpqxz on April 27, 2012, 03:04:47 am
OK, since we already have a thread for shitty music (http://forums.fstdt.net/flame-and-burn/the-hate-on-shitty-music-thread/), I figured it deserved a more positive counterpart.

This is a thread for bands/musicians, past or present, broken up or still together, of ANY genre, that you think were underappreciated in their time, or otherwise didn't get the exposure you feel they deserved.

I'll go first:  this is Mind Over Four, a cult band from Los Angeles who could best be described as "alternative metal", back when that term actually meant something.  This is the song "Conscience of a Nation", off their 1992 album Half Way Down...the only promotional video they ever made.

Saw the band Pg. Lost the other day. Great starting point for post-rock.

Oh gods, why did you have to make this thread? I swear I'm going to live here now... >_>

Soul Cycle. Instrumental metal, that I've got to say, is blowing my fucking mind right now. Both of their albums are up for "free" (name your price) on their Bandcamp page (http://soulcyclemetal.bandcamp.com/album/soul-cycle-ii), and they are phenomenal. There is not one track on either album that I don't absolutely love.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKnijao0AJk

Lithium Dawn. Love this album (found it last week), because it's a cross between Tool & Mastodon, and concept albums are amazing. Again, loving every single track from their debut 'Aion', a story about an immortal man who loses everything and everyone he loves in nuclear war, and what happens as his life goes on from that point. Also available for free from their Bandcamp page (http://lithiumdawn.bandcamp.com/) (actual free, not just 'be a cheapskate if you want/are broke).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by_uPUc6ADo

Shades of Black. More instrumetal, this time from a brilliant kid who really knows his shit. It's an awesome blend of in-your-face heavy and Arabic scales that the western world needs to hear more of. No Bandcamp page for this guy, though he still has his current albums available for free through Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/sobfortwayne), and is currently finishing up a new album that should be available around June/July (just in time for my birthday :D).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoTqs1H9EM0

Corelia. San Diego metal (gods there isn't enough of this...). Not free, unfortunately, but still really good. And if anyone is wondering, yes, the name is a reference to Han Solo's home planet. Bonus nerd points!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGT-hdBz-eI

Aaaaaaannd... I need to stop myself or this post will turn in to even more of a tl;dr than it already is.

The Chasm--truly epic death metal from Mexico; in my not-so-humble opinion, they are the best metal band to ever come out of Mexico.  This is the kind of death metal I really enjoy:  they can play fast, slow, and mid-paced material equally well, and keep the song structures and arrangements interesting instead of just blasting away for 30-40 minutes.

This song is "The Gravefields" off the Reaching the Veil of Death EP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsLAo-m94x0

Several members of The Chasm formed a doom metal side project called "Question of Madness" (with a different vocalist).  It's also pretty good.  It is slow and heavy, but not oppressively so, and the riffs and vocals are actually pretty clever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHWE5Laqgkk And this is what happens when the same nerds who made a metal band decide to use a zombie apocalypse as a metaphor to criticize religion.

I'm not really sure how underexposed this stuff actually is, but Stoner Metal bands.  I never hear about any of them in my area, and the only people that I know of who are aware of the bands are very much into all kinds of metal (and weed, for one guy).

Anyway, I present you some really good examples:

Fu Manchu
http://youtu.be/hYksLCt5z3k

Alabama Thunderpussy
http://youtu.be/xRwn8asR-XI

Atomic Bitchwax
http://youtu.be/A2zKFgKLItA

Monster Magnet

Orange Goblin

Clutch

As an aside, if anyone is familiar with this genre and has more suggestions along these lines, please feel free to share.

Funny thing, every copy of Kyuss' music that I have gotten ahold of is super lo-fi, causing the volume to be low on my mp3 player (even when I rip it myself from my buddies discs).  This annoys the hell out of me, so I never really got into them.  Doesn't mean that I don't like them, but that I am fairly indifferent.

You'll notice I also didn't include Sleep or the Melvins (arguable more Sludge than Stoner).  The bands I used are more obscure but good, since this is an underappreciated music thread.

Fuckin' Ulcerate...hell yeah.  Best thing to come out of New Zealand since sheep jokes.

And speaking of excellent but underrated death metal...anyone here like Hellwitch (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Hellwitch/1284)?  They were part of the whole Florida death metal scene (along with Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Death), but never got the sort of recognition that those bands received.

This is "Viral Exogence" from their first album, Syzygial Miscreancy (they like bizarre titles).  They also have a "comeback album" out called Omnipotent Convocation which is also quite good.

So much metal, hardly any punk.  Don't get me wrong, metal is awesome, but punk needs some love too.  :D

Night Birds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX_g8bfVwm4
Sounds like TSOL, Adolescents, Dead Kennedys and Agent Orange thrown into a blender.  It sounds oldschool and fresh at the same time.  One of the best modern hardcore bands out there.

House Boat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osF3hBNKEWk
Something fans of Screeching Weasel, Descendents, and The Queers can get into.  Very well-done pop punk with a good sense of humor.

The Bouncing Souls:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDoqw51G3Do
Okay, this band isn't overlooked and are one of the most popular underground punk bands, but I really really like them, so I decided to post them regardless.  :P

Jetty Boys:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TITwJwVFQ1c
They basically sound like 90s Green Day, before they put on black eyeliner and became media darlings and were still a legitimate part of the DIY punk scene.  I like it!

Of all the stuff you posted, I liked this best.  I can definitely hear the Agent Orange influence, especially in the guitar work.

Here is a band that basically straddled the line between metal and hardcore punk:  Faith or Fear, from South Jersey.  This is the title track from their album Punishment Area, live at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, Oct 23, 1988.  They reformed recently and their new album is pretty good.

Since Tank mentioned punk rock earlier in the thread, I figured I would bump it with some classic old British punk from an excellent band who were actually much better instrumentalists than most punk rockers of their day:  Peter and the Test Tube Babies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_and_the_Test_Tube_Babies).  Fast, funny, and a bit more musically daring than many of their colleagues.  I suggest that any of you who like old-school punk rock to check these guys out.

Peter and the Test Tube Babies rule!  I hadn't heard Faith or Fear before, they're pretty neat.  It kind of reminds me of the more mid-paced D.R.I. material, which I'm definitely cool with. :)

Also, on the subject of metal, here is a death metal band I discovered recently called Funebrarum:

There's a lot of atmosphere here, and I like it!

Since you mentioned Ulcerate, I just wanted to say that I saw them play in Brooklyn tonight and they tore the roof of the place!

They don't have footage of it up on Youtube yet.  The show was at a total dive in Williamsburg called Public Assembly (http://www.publicassemblynyc.com/), the crowd was friendly but the acoustics were shit, so here is some footage of them playing in their home city of Auckland, New Zealand.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg-pc_MJiKM

Opening for them were two bands:  French neo-black metallers Svart Crown (who were actually pretty interesting for black metal), and Tombs (a sludge metal band from Brooklyn, I liked them but my friend didn't).

Bumping this thread with some Steel Pole Bath Tub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Pole_Bath_Tub), an excellent alt-punk/noise rock band from Bozeman, Montana.  Their last album was kinda meh, but their earlier stuff is killer.

This is their song "Train to Miami", which was featured in the "Left 4 Dead 2" commercial.

This is their song "Twist", which I think is the only official music video they did.

I love Jens Lekman. One of the only lyricists I can appreciate, with the amazing ability to turn seemingly cheesy elements into wonderful flourishes of chamber pop. And he's back!

OK, you want some decent non-metal stuff?  Check out Ewan Dobson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewan_Dobson), arguably the most technically gifted guitarist to ever come out of Canada.  He plays mostly acoustic guitar, but check out what he can do with it.  He plays a fucking trance song on acoustic guitar.

He can play almost any style of music, so check out his other YouTube vids.

Scared of Chaka are a fantastic garage rock-inspired punk band that never seemed to really go anywhere.  I dunno why they didn't get as big as other punk rock bands from the 90s (like NOFX, Offspring, Bad Religion, Screeching Weasel, etc.), but they deserved much more exposure than they had.

Bumping with some Thought Industry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought_Industry), quite possibly one of the most avant-garde prog-metal bands ever to exist.  These guys combined the technicality of King Crimson, the heaviness of early thrash, and the outright weirdness and disdain for convention of Frank Zappa to create something totally new and unique.  Pity they aren't around to perfect it.
