As horrible as this is, a part of me is actually not all that surprised, especially given the religiously backwards nature of Ireland in general. To be honest, it would not surprise me to learn that this kind of thing had been happening all around the world for centuries as the only viable option for difficult births. The problem I have with it is that they chose this option over a more effectively proven one, however I can still see their perspective. I disagree strongly with their perspective, but I can see it.
I just feel deeply sorry for those poor women who had to endure this.
