Father's Day 2014

Sunday is Father's Day.

I am going to dinner with my dad tonight.

My real dad.

Time to remember all of the great things about my dad.

I remember when he'd only ever do things he was interested in, and expected me to share his interests.
I remember him saying that he was disappointed that I wasn't more mischevious, or that I wasn't really all that much into hunting, fishing, or sports.
I remember his lack of patience when it came to anything I was interested in.
I remember how, every Christmas he would always tell his family that I wanted stuff related to sports, poker, or other things he was interested in... and yet whenever I told him I was into video games, he would always get a big scowl in his face.
I remember when he yelled at my Mom making "everything about her"... when she was almost dying from the flu during her cancer treatments.  All because she said she needed him to stay home from hunting for that one time, so that he could help her.
I remember him doing nothing around the house while she was bedridden, expecting 13 year old me to do EVERYTHING around the house.  There were some days he wouldn't even check up on her.
I remember the way he lied to my therapist, who instantly believed him about everything, and who chewed out my mother for "me being exactly like her."
I remember how he would yell at me for wanting a breath of fresh air whenever he was smoking in the car, as if I was being melodramatic when, in actuality, I was suffering from borderline asthma inflicted by HIS smoking.
I remember how, every year, I have to pretend I LIKE him, because his temper is so great that neither of us are allowed to criticize him.  At ALL.
I remember.

And that's why I hate Father's Day.

I just called the big dog, myself.  He's doing good.  He and mom might come out here for a trip, see me, check out the area, meet my roomie...

That's not to say he hasn't done good things, either.

As a person whose mind can't remember the good things and never forgets the bad, I understand completely.

Yeah. I have a tendancy to forget the good bits and remember the shit like how he took over $250 that I had gotten for birthdays and christmas to buy beer, cigarettes, and weed.

I've never been close to my father and often felt that he was trying to force his interests on me growing up, but jeez...

Luckily, we've gotten better in the last few years. We're unlikely to ever be extremely close, but I did make and send him a chainmail belt for Father's Day.

Wow, hearing these stories makes me appreciate my relationship with my dad.
