One of my friends finally badgered me into getting Diablo 3.  It's not bad.  First dungeon crawler I've ever really played to an extent, and I like it so far.  It's not amazing, but it's fun.  Also, easily one of the goriest games I've played in a while.  There's one dungeon with baskets of severed heads in it.  When you hit the baskets they fall apart with a splash of blood, and you can see and hear the severed heads bouncing and rolling away.

I really REALLY hate these XBox Live updates.  Every time I have to download one, I can't get back online and have to spend about 20 minutes trying again and again and again.  I messaged them, and they said there shouldn't be a problem, even after I sent them a copy of the actual error.  Ugh!  At least it finally worked, after 20+ minutes!

o_O  Really?  I don't know what could be causing that cause I have no problem getting on after updates.

For anyone looking to buy their way to victory in the mechwarrior universe, I giveth the:
http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/06/288-founders-package-on-sale-now

The pack I probably won't buy because it's releasing two weeks after another MMO I just preordered two days before this fucking pack launched.... I would have gone in for 120, but my entertainment budget is hosed for a while after that Mel Brooks collection and pre-ordering secret world.

But really... a custom atlas... 100 tons o terror... Maybe I can sell some organs... God damn this year and it's videogames.

Story time:

I'm talking with this one guy, and he asks me if I play video games.
- "Yes"
- "What do you think of the new Call of Duty?"
- "I don't play it"
- "Oh, so you're one of those casual gamers, huh?"

Well, if you want casual to mean "I do it as a hobby and not for pay," I guess I would call myself casual. But yeah, NO...

In other news, I just got my hands on a closed beta key for Secret World. Since I didn't get a chance to play a Dragon or Illuminati last weekend, and the servers are different so I didn't have access to my Templar, I rolled up a Dragon. I had read that the quests were all the same, regardless of faction, but thought they just meant "everyone goes to the same areas, so the general quests are the same, but faction quests are different." (The way it in in every MMO.) No, even the faction quest is the same.

This makes me wonder about the longevity of the game. There are no classes and you can swap builds easily, so replayability based on classes is gone. (Technically, you do have to specialize to a certain extent to have enough skill points, but with enough grinding, you can overcome that.) Since the faction stories are the same, there is little draw to replay to see all the story. (You do get different reward messages when you complete a quest, but that's the only difference.) You are limited to 3 characters, making it harder to keep multiple builds (if you want a tank, a DPS, and a healer, you can do that. Although role switching isn't very hard. You can do it without even changing weapons. "OK, with this gear, my Fists/Pistols Templar is a tank. Put on this gear, switch a few abilities, and he heals.")

I do enjoy the game, and will most likely pick it up once I have money. But I can't help but think FunCom shot themselves in the foot with this one. Niche gameplay that will drive away a lot of players. Little replay value.

Technically, the term is "Amateur", with "Professional" being the term used to denote someone who gets paid for it.  ("Amateur" being an insult is probably because people view those who play for just the fun of it as "not being skilled enough" to do it professionally, despite some people wanting hobbies to remain hobbies)

95% of hardcore players are, in fact, amateurs.

I play and review video games. I'm not 'hardcore'. It's just a passion of mine.

From my understanding, the difference between a "casual" and a "hardcore" player is not the player, but the games that they play.

"Casual games" are games that require little effort or time to play, and don't really have much to offer once you've mastered them. (i.e. browser flash games, Facebook games, iPhone games, a decent majority of handheld games, arcade-style run and gun shooters, and just about everything in the Wii library.)

"Hardcore" games, by contrast, are games that have a steeper learning curve, requiring a much more significant investment from the player, and are much more rewarding in the long run. These games have more replay value and are able to be played for a much longer periods of time (i.e. Tactics-based shooters, RPGs, RTS, 4X,)

That is the definition that I have heard most frequently.

Of course, going by what I just wrote, this makes the above encounter even more hilarious, since CoD is probably one of the most "casual" FPSs on the market.

CAVE has made plenty of ports of their games for the iPhone. Of course, those originated in arcades, so they don't really count. Oh, yeah, and I'm assuming that  "just about everything in the Wii library" excludes most of the first-party titles without "Wii" in their name.

A new expansion for HOI 3. I hope in this version ships will now be upgraded (maybe have them stuck in port while it's happening) instead of having to build new ships every two years to replace the whole fleet.

Also, in a game as Italy, Barbarossa started with Germany having barely 760,000 troops on the border, and just over 1 million in total. The USSR had over 2 million (mobilised) troops on the Axis-USSR border, with another 550,000 against Finland. Not difficult to see who one, and the AI is more than happy to attack tank divisions with infantry while crossing a river.
