I think the Humanism logo is appropriate here: GOAL!

The Bible would beg to differ.
Consumption is not a politically combative act — refraining from consumption even less so.

It depends on which books, of course.

We can reduce the Bible to phrases that sound good in a modern context; of course, we wouldn't have much material left to work with. Would we be so forgiving to other works of literature, such as the Malleus Maleficarum or Mein Kampf? Are we so kind to works that have far less hateful messages in them than the Bible does, such as Herrnstein's and Murray's "The Bell Curve"? No, we rightly regard the hateful content in those books as indicative of the content as a whole; only after Christianity has taken such a thorough beating by nonreligious movements does it find itself desperately seeking new congregants through cherry-picking bits and pieces of its holy text that sound good and ignoring what is clearly the main messages of the Bible -- fear and hate.

Christianity lost its best argument when its adherents were no longer allowed to burn infidels at the stake.
Consumption is not a politically combative act — refraining from consumption even less so.

Admittedly, this came from Liberal Logic 101, but ...

Well, you know what they say about broken clocks...
Excuse me, sir, do you have a minute to talk about your lord and savior, Hannibal Barca?

Quote from: Seneca
Religion is regarded by the common man as true, by the wise man as false, and by the powerful man as useful
Yeah, if the pagans are so smart, why did Jesus invade Pagan-land on the back of a dragon and kill them all!

Of course, it should be no surprise if a couple of those "clocks" supported the Patriot Act.

There is a difference, of course. The CIA/NSA et al could reasonably suggest that they were trying to investigate terrorism in the PRISM program and other wire-tap programs. Obviously, you can't make that claim of their spying on the Senate, it's pure institutional corruption.

You're just not trying hard enough.

They were investigating treason. They were classified investigating information leaks that could aid the enemy. They were investigating foreign nationals acting as lobbyists  pushing for laws that would aid the enemy. They were investigating citizens working as lobbyists for foreign nationals.  Since senators potentially have a great deal of contact with many individuals of interest and eye-witness testimony is unreliable they were recording everything just in case. It's all just a training exercise before trying it abroad and the data will be expunged. We have some very well places sources that know what's up but we need to protect them and are using this as a cover.

On a more general note, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism.  I wish more people understood that.

I knew I should have buried something obviously over the top like "the Koch brothers told us to" somewhere in the middle of that list.  :-[

I propose that everyone on the internet should be made to learn that.
