I'm about as pro-gun as they come to the point that I would have no trouble lessening the restrictions on suppressors (restricted because of fear of poaching, really?) and I think the National Firearms Act was poorly judged in court (defense telling the judges they should rule based on what the prosecution says? Really?) and yet, for all of that, I just wish Ted Nugent would shut up and go away.

Seriously, I think we can do better than a guy who became a 17-year old girl's legal guardian just so he could fuck her.

And with that in mind, I present to you Failure to Fire...

All I'm saying is that some black people are racist scumbags, just as some white people are racist scumbags.

As someone from Africa, this is a depressingly true statement. However, I would like to add a little to this. Even in Africa where whites are a tiny minority, they are still safer in general than your average black person. Even with extreme BEE policies whites are still favored for jobs, more likely to get an education, be protected and investigated by police and be protected by laws and economic policies.

Yes you get racist scumbag black people seething with hate at whites who were / are just waiting for an opportunity to exact violence against white people. However, despite that, whites still have more social power making actual racist acts against them very rare.

What country in Africa are you from?  I think it depends.

I am from South Africa, but we get a lot of news and information from the rest of Africa. Despite a reasonably non violent transition from white rule in 1994. There is still a huge amount racism and animosity on both sides particularly amongst those who are older than 40.

South Africa struggled with Apartheid for decades.  That doesn't just go away overnight.

The Horseshoe Effect in action:

That graph is confusing. I get what the left-right division is supposed to mean, but I'm not terribly clear on the vertical axis. Is it supposed to be a scale going from minimum to maximum state control? If so, how is it that "looks to the future for inspiration" and "prefers innovation to tradition" (and their equivalent conservative concepts) are located high upon the graphic, when they are basically the fundamental definition of progressivism vs. conservatism*? Or is it somehow more true of a conservative than a reactionary that they like tradition and look to the past? If anything, I'd argue the opposite.

The whole thing looks like it could sort of be analogous to the libertarian political compass (with one axis replaced by a simple division) excepts the actual positions represented in the graph don't really match up.

I tried to hunt down the original source to see if it provides further explanation, but as far as I can tell it's this page which pretty much just contains the graphic itself. Although it does title it "the political  spectrum" which sort of confirms that it's supposed to be read as a gradual scale rather than as a discrete partition.

* to the extent they are general ideologies with consistent definitions and not groups of particular positions that get lumped together by historical accident.

I'm pro-gun, but I fucking hate Ted Nugent.  He's a racist, a coward, and a hypocrite.  Moreover, he makes the rest of us look bad.

It is, I think, a sign of the stupidity and dishonesty of the average Southern conservative that this cowardly, unprincipled bigot is seriously considered more patriotic than, for instance, Daniel Inoyue. He is after all wildly popular among the Tea party crowd.

I honestly don't think the left-right axis thing is useful any more. It is a semi-nice heuristic. Stop trying to make is slightly more complex, it is never going to be any more useful than it already is.

The party's name is the Democratic Party. It has been since 1830. Please spell correctly.

That graph is confusing.

It's incredibly fucking confusing, in part because it's using two axes to discuss one-and-a-but issues that aren't completely aligned (social politics, mostly, with occasional economics).

Modern American liberalism is essentially the background radiation from the New Deal and the civil rights movement. Modern American conservatism is the increasingly distorted simulacra from the Reagan administration and the Moral Majority. Despite everything gobshite TV pundits will tell you, liberalism and conservatism in the US aren't exact opposites, so they don't map precisely (hence why some of those text labels are a bit tortured). And ironically enough, it's conservatism that is both newer and, in many respects, the more radical and transformative ideology.

It's probably because of these labels - "liberal" and "conservative", that suit neither side of the aisle well - that American political discourse seems to get so garbled. Some Republican voters are conservatives in the proper sense, but many are reactionaries. And sure, some Democrats are liberals, but some are moderates or centrists, and a few are (shock horror) democratic socialists.
