A commission set up to study child sexual abuse by the Catholic Church in France has found that since the 1950s, at least 200,000 children, largely boys between the ages of 10 and 13, were sexually abused by Catholic clergy in France.

You are a disgrace to our humanity. In this hell there have been abominable mass crimes … but there has been even worse, betrayal of trust, betrayal of morale, betrayal of children.

It doesn't concern you, Sister, that kind of absolutist view of the universe? Right and wrong determined solely by a single all-knowing, all powerful being whose judgment cannot be questioned and in whose name the most horrendous acts can be sanctioned without appeal?

Being required by someone else’s religious beliefs to behave contrary to one’s sexual identity is degrading and disrespectful.

God DAMN.  That's the population of my hometown.  That's roughly 8 children a day in the past 70 some-odd years.  A kid every 3 hours.  And just in France.

And yet, the Vatican is allowed to continue to exist and not be on fire.  Fucking stunning.

One thing I did see noted is that this commission in France used a different methodology than other groups studying the issue elsewhere (such as in Pennsylvania or Australia), which may have led to a much higher figure than was determined elsewhere.

Whether that means that clerical abuse was that much more rampant in France, or that the French method led to overcounting, or that other methods led to undercounting (or both) remains to be seen.

When they are sued they will ask their parishioners (that is the people they abused, their parents, their brothers, sisters and children) to pay the damages rather than use any of the enormous wealth they have hoarded.

"Faced with this scourge, for a very long time the Catholic Church's immediate reaction was to protect itself as an institution..."

Same as literally everywhere there are Catholic churches on Earth.

And they continue to see themselves as the arbiters of personal morality.
