http://fusion.net/story/134163/silicon-valleys-startup-castle-is-looking-for-roommates-and-the-requirements-are-completely-bonkers/I don't even know how to word how they think they're not breaking a number of discrimination laws with these requirements. Let's take a look:
– Have a top-class degree or job with a strong math/science requirement
Well, right off the bat, I'm disqualified. However, if the money isn't coming from a illegal source, why does it matter what I do for a living?
– Exercise at least 15 hours in a normal week
What I do with my free time is not your problem.
– Commute by car less than 20% of the time (Bicycle commuter!)
And if I have a long commute that makes biking unfeasible? Or, worse, have a physical disability that makes it impossible?
– Prefer organized systems and common rules
OK, this one's fair.
– Like petting dogs
And if I don't like dogs?
And the disqualifiers:
– Watch more than 4 hours of TV/movie/game entertainment per week
What I do with my free time is not your problem.
– Have more than 1 tattoo
What I put on my body is not your problem.
– Have ever attended more than 1 protest
Why are you so obsessed with restricting your tenants' free time.
– Make more than three posts a week to social media
And if social media is how I keep in touch with a lot of my family?
– Listen to a songs with explicit lyrics more than an once a day
While I understand that you don't want to be disturbed, which is fair, if I'm not bothering anyone, why does it matter what kind of music I like?
– Wear make-up more than twice a week
What I choose to wear is not your problem.
– Own any clothing, shoes, watches, or handbags costing over $500
What I spend my money on is not your problem.
– Have bills that get paid by somebody else
I get that you want tenants to be responsible, but if the money isn't coming from an illegal source, why do you care so much about where it comes from?
– Drive a vehicle that was given to you by your parents
– Get regular spending money or gifts from your parents
Yes, how DARE someone get gifts from their parents.
– Have more than one internet app date per week
See all the other comments about free time.
– Have a complex diet that requires lots of refrigerator space
I understand not wanting people to hog the fridge, that's fair, but why do you care what I eat?
– Drink alcohol more than 3 drinks per week
– Use marijuana more than twice a year
If I want to use these responsibly and I'm not bugging anyone with them, why do you care?
– Have been prescribed anything by a psychiatrist more than once
Good job on literally BREAKING THE LAW with this one.
– Use any other drug more than twice in your entire life
What constitutes a drug? Is it stuff like meth or crack? If so, if I'm clean, why do you care? Is it stuff like tobacco? If so, see the comment about pot and alcohol. Or is it something like aspirin or cough medicine?
All this for the low price of $1000 to live in the same room as some other person or over $1700 for your own room. I get that Silicon Valley is one of the most expensive places to live in America, but this kind of stuff makes no sense to me.
