Whilst I do get annoyed at people who talk about anti-white prejudice or racism or whatsoever you wish to call it in the same terms as they do the more severe socio-culturally reinforced forms of racism that PoCs encounter on a daily basis, I am not sure I can get behind a poster which just wilfully throws semantics out the window. The power dynamic is important and makes anti PoC racism a far more serious issue, but that just isn't what the word 'racism' means.
Oh look it's me.

I can't say I can get behind that poster either. Even if semantically its just prejudice, it's still wrong.

While I agree that whites are not oppressed, that poster is still lying.

Not sure if this belongs here or in Funny Pictures, but considering that the picture is of Santorum, I think this works. Will move if asked.

Whilst the mosaic contains NSFW content, it's too low-res to actually be NSFW.
I've seen this, the Rick Santorum pic made up of gay porn, all I have to say is

This reminds me of a quote from (IIRC) Ann Tickner where she quotes an exchange between a reporter and a Polish representative in (again, IIRC) the early 90's. The Polish conservative party had just won parliament due to voter dissatisfaction with the economy, a point the conservative party ran on by promising to "get the economy back on track." Several months into their rule, they had passed several laws restricting abortion but not one dealing with the economy (112th Congress, anyone?). The following dialogue is between a reporter and one of the conservative legislators.

Reporter: Your party ran for election and won on the message that you would fix the economy, so why all the focus on abortion.

Legislator: The economy's a very complex subject with no real easy answer. There are a multide of actor's we can't control. We can, however, control abortion.

Again, this is all based on memory from almost a year ago so the dialogue may not be verbatim, but I think it pertains to the cartoon.

EDIT: Upon looking through my school notes, I believe I attributed it to the wrong person. I believe Marysia Zalewski made this point in International Affairs (1995) in an article "Well, What is the Feminist Perspective on Bosnia." Sadly, I'm unable to find the article online, so  :(

Dan Savage is treating anti-LGBT bullying as "Oh, well as soon as you get out of college you can just grow up, move to Seattle, take a trip to Paris, and adopt a baby! It's just so simple!" No, no it's not.

I never got that vibe at all.  The campaign was in response to gay teen suicides that were in the news about the time it started.  At the time, Dan basically said, "We need to do something to reassure gay teens who are committing suicide so that they don't do it.  High school is a really rough time for anybody, especially suicidal teens, and we need to remind them that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.  Also, gay kids tend not to have a lot of adult gay role models, and thus may not be able to see themselves as gay adults.  If you have something to shoot for, you're less likely to off yourself."

I didn't know about the biphobic, transphobic, racist aspect though.  That's pretty fucked up.

I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

This isn't a criticism so much as an idle thought, but I've never been terribly fond of the term "people of colour".

Reminds me of this poem.

When I born, I black.
When I grow up, I black.
When I go in sun, I black.
When I scared, I black.
When I sick, I black.
And when I die, I still black.

And you white people.
When you born, you pink.
When you grow up, you white.
When you go in sun, you red.
When you cold, you blue.
When you scared, you yellow.
When you sick, you green
And when you die, you grey…

And you calling me colored??
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

The thing I don't like about that poem is that it still keeps the focus on skin colour, maintaining the "us vs them" status quo. If the message was more along the lines of "you're coloured too" instead of "I'm less coloured than you", I'd be down with it, but as it stands, the undercurrents of hostility feel very counterproductive.

Same here. We are all people, people. Sure, some of us have it better than others for very stupid reasons. But as long as we keep on putting up divisions, we can never solve that.
