I was pretty "meh" on this episode, too, mostly because it was all stuff we've seen before.  It was pretty much the exact same conflict as "Over a Barrel", involving the same character.  They tried to mix it up with Flutterbat, but having just done the "Fluttershy turns into a monster" gag in the previous episode, it kind of fell flat here.

I liked it a lot! I liked that the writer paired up two characters who don't interact much, and that the conflict wasn't black-and-white. "Over a Barrel" did that too, but "Bats!" did it better if you ask me.

I agree. I think the conflict and the overall episode was better than Over a Barrel. I never much liked that episode.

Also, the Winter Wrap Up reference made me smile.

I would like to point out the resolution of this episode was a shitty one from an ecological perspective.
If you give those bats easy access to food they'll end up becoming unable to find food elsewhere, so if there is ever a disease that takes out  a significant portion of the apple crop then the bats will all starve. Another possibility is that the bats will end up overpopulating and killing off other species.
