My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Out of every episode so far, I have to say that this was one of my favorite slice-of-life stories. The call backs were awesome (Matilda, the elderly pony with the bubble-pipe cutie mark, the buffalo partying with the ponies in Applioosa, the Smile Song, the photographs) and Cheese Sandwich was an excellent counterpart to Pinkie Pie. Having an episode as song-heavy as this was somewhat surprising (to me, at least) but very welcome. Also, Derpy drinking out of a chocolate fountain.

I had a feeling it would be song heavy (because it's fucking Weird Al) but I have to admit, a lot more songs than I thought there would be.

You know, as much as I enjoyed the wackiness, I gotta say that the parts of the episode meant to tug at your heartstrings were my favorites.

I thought the message in this one was good. They were kinda setting it up like Pinkie was going to defeat Cheese and prove herself the best, but then they flipped it around and were like, no, you're BOTH great party ponies and you don't have to compete with each other. I liked that.

As everyone else has said, lots of good call-backs and gags in this one (I especially liked Pinkie singing in Spanish and Cheese stealing the smile song), but there was one minor disappointment for me. The song at the end would have been perfect for a Vinyl Scratch cameo.

Side note, I counted 21 candles on Rainbow's cake. Perhaps the mane six are a bit older than fans have estimated (mid-late teens).

I'd always estimated them to be about college-aged myself.  After all, most of them live on their own, they all have jobs, etc.

Also, I gotta say that the whole "suddenly live action" is probably one of the single funniest things I've seen on the show.  It's just so wonderfully ridiculous (and when you first watch it, unexpected).

I find Pinkie Pie to be an extremely selfish, distrustful, and un-empathetic pony, and this episode did little to change that opinion.  The moment anything goes wrong, her immediate initial reaction is to assume everyone is out to get her.  She assumes she knows what everyone wants without bothering to run it by them, or even flying in the face of what they've told her otherwise.  She is incapable of accepting that there are ponies who don't conform to her narrow view of "friendship".  And despite the fact that she runs into these problems in pretty much every episode where she's featured, she never learns from them.

In the very first episode, she invades Twilight's house and throws her a party that she expressly did not want.  Despite the party supposedly being in "Twilight's honor", Pinkie continues the party without her even when Twilight leaves to try to get some work done, but can't even do that because the party "for her" is too loud.  Pinkie may have had good intentions, but she's completely oblivious to the consequences of her actions and only seems to care about how she was "trying" to make Twilight feel rather than how she "actually" made Twilight feel.

The same thing happened in "A Friend in Deed" when she spent the entire episode harassing a lonely old man simply because he didn't react to her the way she wanted him to.  Rather than getting to know him and understanding his needs, she just relentlessly harassed and mocked him the entire episode until he gave in and conformed to what she wanted due to nothing more than a lucky coincidence.

Therefore, I will give Pinkie credit in today's episode for actually recognizing that Rainbow Dash was not appreciating her efforts, but I have little faith that this lesson will stick.

But this episode, like "Party of One", "Griffon the Brush-Off", and "Luna Eclipsed", still illustrated her habit of instantly turning against everyone the moment anything goes wrong.  In "Party of One", she threw herself into a depression and was ready to ditch all of her friends based solely on what she assumed was going on, without talking to any of them first.  In "Luna Eclipsed" she spent the entire episode making Luna feel like crap by freaking out all over the place, and was apparently supposed to be forgiven by simply saying "lol just kidding", as if that completely negated all the emotional trauma she'd caused.  In "Griffon the Brush-Off", she spent the entire episode stalking Rainbow Dash and demanding her attention even when she didn't want to give it, or was busy with someone else.  Then in this episode, as soon as everyone started paying attention to Cheese, she immediately went into, "Whelp, I guess that means they'll never want to hang out with me again and I'm just going to leave town so everyone feels bad for me and comes back to me."

To me, Pinkie Pie is a reminder of the people who constantly pressure me to go to the bar after work even though I don't drink, and talk to me like I'm crazy if I say I'd rather spend the weekend at home than hanging out with a bunch of people I don't know at a venue I'm not interested in.  Combined with my family who constantly buys me useless "girl" crap because I'm a "girl" and I'm supposed to like that stuff and who cares what I actually like if it doesn't conform to what they want to get me.  Combined with the Facebook attention whores who scream "IF THIS POST DOESN'T GET 100 LIKES I'M GOING TO CUT MYSELF BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY NO ONE LOVES ME!!!!!"

If other people like Pinkie, great.  But I just can't get behind her myself.

Yeah, true. no matter how many life lessons the ponies get, I don't think they'll be getting any significant personality overhauls.

They should have an episode where Pinkies behavior ends up hurting someone, and in the end she learns to still be happy but not be a control freak.

Well, it looks like we may be getting that EqG sequel this summer. Since it's a battle of the bands thing, hopefully the Mane 6 band will atleast be thrash/death metal. Hey, a guy can hope right?
