Title: Boycotts called against Oreo cookies
Post by: Xander Zzyzx on June 27, 2012, 08:38:19 pm
I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet on this forum, but I found an article from BuzzFeed, that has collected hateful and intolerant comments from anti-gay Facebook posters who condemn gay people and are making a call to boycott Oreo cookies.

Here's the link to the article: How Could ANYONE Boycott A Cookie? (http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/how-could-you-boycott-a-cookie)

Now I know the ignorant comments collected by Buzzfeed are from intolerant jerks, it still saddens me that there are people who think those thoughts about me and an entire group of people, and how we're still so hated simply for existing. Yeah, and THEY claim that they're the persecuted ones. These people have no idea what it's like to receive real persecution.

Funny, it worked fine in preview. Oh, and BTW, I'm sorry that I can't even get a link right anymore. It took me three tries to get that link to parse properly.

Ah, okay. I went into F&B afterward and I couldn't find a thread related to this. I wanted to start some discussion over how religiously intolerant people and groups get all bent out of shape when a company, a private company, supports equal rights, as if such an action is somehow a personal slight against the religious nuts. Seeing all the calls to violence and condemnation of gay people from those comments kinda makes me feel a bit bummed out that there is still so much hate toward us, and that there are still people out there who are bent on wanting to destroy us.

That one has to be a troll no one can be that homophobic to the point where they invent a new word. On a side note who else thinks Gayism would be the greatest name for a gay bar or dance club?

You could probably add Ford Motor Company to the boycott list too since they've supported gay rights, and done the unthinkable: They've placed ads in gay publications (http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=16903). Not only that, but at the bottom of the linked article it looks like that GM and Chrysler Corp. have also been in support of gay rights. So there you are fundies, you have to boycott the Big 3 car companies, which will surely cause you guys an aneurysm since all that's left is those commie foreign car companies. So I guess you guys are hooped when it comes to making new vehicle purchases.

Tough luck, fundtards.

There are a lot of companies I didn't list. I just threw in a few. I wanted to focus on the companies whose services are used daily by these fundies. I doubt these people are willing to actually going to give up watching their favorite shows and movies because Disney and Viacom are gay friendly.

On the flip-side, did you know that Autozone, Dominos, and ExxonMobil are not gay friendly?

Not shocked about Dominos being not gay friendly, the guy who runs the company is a fundie, and gives a shitload of money to anti-choice groups.

Ah, another good reason to not patronize Domino's, I find their pizza repellant anyway.

Honestly with this one, I don't know what is worse, that people actually talk like that, or that they write / type like that.
To me it looks like a poe or a troll or something as though the person writing it is trying to make a parody of a southern redneck, and I am mildly horrified to think that it might be real.

I've been seeing a lot of Allstate ads coming out in support of gay rights, too. Mostly as posters at bus stops, but it's still something. Get an online quote, and they'll donate to some gay rights group who's name escapes me ATM. Suppose they'll be boycotted next?

OK, while I think that people getting riled up of companies supporting gay rights is a bit silly, am I the only one who wishes that Nabisco actually made the multicolored Oreos, with different flavors of filling?

Seriously, the first thing I thought when I saw that picture was "damn, I wonder if I could buy these and eat them for dessert."
Title: Re: Boycotts called against Oreo cookies

Eh, I don't know if they'd do them in different flavors.  My bet if they DO come out with something like this, it'd just be the white frosting with food coloring added.

Well, that would be disappointing.

Still though, Nabisco makes Peanut Butter Double-Stuf Oreos, which fucking rule.  How could anyone boycott this?

So, we've got Kraft, Kellogg's, General Mills, Coke, PepsiCo, and I assume Nestle and Unilever.  So basically, for these people to boycott "gay-friendly" companies, they're stuck eating generic brands.  Nothing wrong with generic brands, as a poor college student, I'll still use them sometimes, I'd just rather drink Coke compared to Sam's Choice(although Black Cherry is awesome).

Good luck with your little boycott idiots, you'll probably go against it at your next meal.

Yeah, I've heard that a lot of the generic food is, essentially, the official brand stuff but repackaged, right down to coming from the same factories.  Not all, but most.

So, if that's true... they're screwed!

I don't know how true that is.  You have to look at the label.  Usually if something is manufactured by a major company for a retailer, it will say so on the label.  Many supermarkets do own their own private-label brands, or have longstanding contracts/arrangements with lower-profile food producers.

At any rate, my family has been buying store-brand stuff for years, and most of the time, it's at least as good in quality as the higher-priced brand name stuff.  It's a good way to save money.   8)

There is a factory not to far from my college(relatively speaking) that produces garbage bags for hefty and Great Value(Wal-Mart's brand).  There might be a few differences, but the product is pretty much the same, and the differences don't matter(Wal-Mart's seem a little on the small side).  When it comes to food, I think your right though.  Most companies care about their recipe and won't let it be branded as something else.  If a store/private label does use food from another company, there will be a label of said second company somewhere clearly visible.  Store label brands do tend to be pretty good in quality.  Target has the best private label IMO, although Wal-Marts private label can be a little inconsistent when it comes to food quality(still worth the price though).

When I worked at Del Monte for a season many (many) moons ago, we would shut down the labeller and swap in the Aldi brand labels and the Jewel brand labels all the time.  Usually, we did 3 runs per night, one for each label.  They didn't switch the cans coming down the belt, just the labels.

No idea if it is still like this, but I imagine that it probably is.
