Okay, so much for my faith in humanity. South Korea recently confiscated over 17000 pills made up of dried placenta and ground stillborn/aborted baby. Supposedly, these pills are supposed to enhance stamina, and yet have superbacteria in them.

Don't mind me, I'm just gonna kneel before the porcelain god for a while...

I think living in a 3rd world country has desensitized me to stuff like this. Muti killings are quite common and basically involves using anything of anything and anyone. Organs, babies, children, organs from specific types of people, animal parts (normally from rare and exotic pets) all mixed together. Then there are the ones who make their stuff out of household products like drain cleaner. You sadly get used to hearing about the grisly details.

As far as Asian traditional medicine goes, its one of the leading causes of rhino extinction in Africa. Their belief that ingesting rhino horn cures impotence has led to a huge increase in hunting. The worst thing is, is that stuff like this in Asia is not even treated as morally reprehensible, its all out in the open. Its pretty depressing.

I can just see the fundies now saying this happened because all Chinese people are atheist communists. They completely ignore important parts becaus it's. Conveiant for them. I bet this will be used by anti choice asshole for years to come.

Honestly...I'm unsurprised.  People have been trying all kinds of shit to enhance their stamina.  We want to be better, faster, smarter, stronger, and more virile...its only natural that there are some of us who go to insane (and patently disgusting) lengths to try and make that dream a reality without doing any real, hard work.

Or, as my programming teacher put it, "Laziness is the mother of invention."  Never said anything about that "invention" not being something that'd make it hard to keep your lunch down...

Yeah, seriously, work out a bit folks. Couple sit ups, some walking, maybe even a few push ups. It can do a lot for a sedentary body.

I read about this elsewhere (I think it was on Yahoo News as well), and all I can say is...what.the.actual.fuck.

Now, I like dead baby jokes as much as the next guy, but it stops being funny when it stops being a joke and becomes actual food/medical products made from dead babies.

I mean, seriously, I don't expect clinical trials for rhino horn or dead baby gunk, but doesn't Mr. Lee notice that he has spent a kabillion dollars on folk meds and he still can't get it up???

I think you may have South Korea confused with North Korea.

In any case though, I think it's more that the traditional (i.e. fucking useless and rather bad for the environment) medicine has been around for hundred of years and as such is firmly entrenched in their culture. Western, science-based medicine, on the other hand is not, and thus has a much harder time appealing to the more moronic elements of society.

I don't think it is caused by the authorities lying to them as much as the communities believe the word of others more. While the leaders of just about any country lie through their teeth daily, the issue here is more a traditionalism problem. It has been passed down from father to son that ingesting dead baby and rhino horn will make you more virile. Now despite the fact that it has never worked before, people trust the people within their own community more than some external government or authority.

Although chances are that stuff like this actually does 'work' in that it triggers a placebo effect in the user.

The creepy part here is that I've seen a lot of "stamina" pills that look similar sold at many gas stations. They're usually located next to the glass case containing "tobacco water-pipes".
