I find this really interesting, and I wonder if they'll be able to develop this kind of technology in my lifetime. Travelling to the moon was impressive enough; imagine witnessing man's first journey outside of our solar system. Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?
-
It is cool to imagine what humanity could do in the future. I think faster than light travel maybe possible and might very well be in our (humanities) future.
-
And since the Prime Directive prohibits interfering with civilizations below the warp drive level, maybe if we get this figured out the aliens will finally contact us.
-
Woohoo! I wanna watch NASCAR with a Vulcan!
-
I'd rather watch UFC with a Klingon.
-
Fuck that shit sharing beers with Turians.
-
If this is indeed in the future, who thinks there'll be a global shitstorm over whether to call it either warp speed or hyperspace?
-
Do what I did in a original story I wrote ages ago. Hyperwarp.
EDIT: Actually, if you want to be more fandom-inclusive it could be called Hyperwarptransvortexschismsliding.
-
I prefer Mass Effect's FTL travel.
-
Just call it a TARDIS bubble.
-

Then what's regular warp?
-
A warp that drinks decaff.
-
I'd like to learn logic and philosophy with a Vulcan.
Um...Why is everyone looking at me like I'm weird?
-
I prefer Mass Effect's FTL travel.
Considering what happened after (where we met the creators of the Mass Rekays), I think warp or hyperdrive is safer.
Of course, if you left Earth, it wouldn't be the same when you got back, but hey getting to know an alien species would be awesome, depending on how.
(Am I the only one whose mind immediately jumped in the gutter at the thought of alien contact?)

Am I the only one whose mind immediately jumped in the gutter at the thought of alien contact?
Are you saying you want to have some fun with some female Twi'leks and Togrutas?? ;D

Didn't think of a specific race, but the thought of that kind of contact was one of the first things that pooped in my head.
-
Hey it's ok, I don't judge, I want to have some fun with a certain red-headed, rich, juvenile delinquent from Naboo, who'll be Emperor of the entire gaxlxy in 50 years so... ;D (What?? Why are you looking at me like that?? Young Palpy was a hottie back the day. And I totally know he was even a horrible person then, but I don't give a fuck.)
-
I wonder if the first person that fucked an alien would go down in history....
-
Probably not, unless it produced offspring, though they would get bragging rights for life. Also I love the direction this thread has gone, but this is just coming from someone with their mind in the gutter....
-
I would want to meet something like the Hanar from Mass Effect make of that as you will.

"A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." I don't think it means what you think it means.
-
I'm just going by the timeline of events from the Star Wars Universe,so...
-
Considering he got quite a few women in his older years, I'm sure he was quite the ladies man in his youth as well.
-
You know the funny thing is that in the novel Star Wars: Darth Plagueis, they do allude to the fact that he was a bit of a ladies man. There's even a part when he more or less picks up some chick at some fancy embassy party. lol
-
What about Orion women? No green chick love round here?
-
Note to self: if warp drive becomes a reality, start a company to produce inter-species Alien-Human porn.
-
pooped in my head.
I see your mind still hasn't made it out of the gutter. :P
Also:
The Doctor: Well, by his time, you lot are spread out across half the galaxy.
Rose Tyler: Meaning?
The Doctor: So many species, so little time.

I can't wait to get that book when it comes in pb.

You're looking at a guy who watched a lot of the original Star Trek upon entering puberty.
-
I volunteer as a temporary Palpatine substitute until the hyperspace drive is perfected, nickinack!

Fuck Yeah Porn...

It's a great read, when I heard they were going to release it I pre-ordered mine right away. The author, James Luceno, is a favorite Star Wars author of mine.

Are you saying that you're willing to run over some pedestrians, kill your entire immediate family, and join the order of the sith lords just for me?? I feel so special...
-
If we do get warp drive does that mean I'm one step closer to joining a space version of the Navy?

So you want to join the Imperial Navy??
You know I love a man in uniform.
-
I mostly want to join a space Navy so I can captain a cool ass starship like Captain Keys from Halo or Captain Picard from Next Generation.

To bring this back on topic: warp drive may not be the best idea

You're no fun, plus is this your first time, because thread derailment is a way of life around here.

Aiming to the side of your target would just ensure that the beam hits something else eventually. A better solution would be regular stops. You shoot off a few low-energy beams instead of one big one.

Either way, don't be directly in front of the Enterprise when it shows up.
EDIT: Noticed this particularly facepalm-worthy comment on the article:
Mystery of Doomsday
Helloooo Mystery
Its seems humanity are about to engage to alien technology, If the earth cosmos scientist look into alien technology its all about magnetism, UFO space craft sighting do not use fuel, moving that faster than speed of light isn't possible for fueled engine energy. Its only the magnetic properties got this kind of energy thru magnetism, its like picking naval fleet on atmosphere beyond galaxies. Doomsday weapon! no its not; maybe the Judgement day will, but on that day every single matter on space are included, because every element of celestial body are needed to construct the kingdom of the creator.

Magnets! That's... completely not how they work.

Hopefully. I'd join in a heartbeat.
-
Join the Space Corps. Mine stuff! Get vapourised in a cadmium III explosion! Or you could be the last human left alive or a hologram!

Which race do you volunteer to initiate 'First Contact' with? It can be either gender (if the race has gender), your choice. Also, contact can be first time or permenant.
I choose the Zelrons (female) from Star Wars EU.

I can't remember what they're called as it's been a long time since I've seen the movie but... the guys from "Earth Girls Are Easy." I'll shave them down and have first contact with them very happily :D
-

Call me crazy, but I would think there are no other races in space. Unless of course "Gayniggers from Outer Space" was a documentary.
-
Back on topic:
You mean back to the original derailing? :P
I'd choose the Vulcans. Logic is something Earth is in desperate need of.
-
I'm torn between Vulcans, for the reason TigerHunter gives, and Twi'Leks, because...well, do I really have to explain that one?
-
Hanar...What I have my reasons.

I dunno...Vulcans and Klingons, at least, are shown to have multiple skin colors.
For Star Wars, there's Twi'Leks.
Of course, that brings up "what measure is a race?"...
-
I want to find a colony of space-faring yetis, just to find out that they've been fucking with us all these years.
-
Andalites; I want morphing technology!
-

If they're not humans, they're not a race, they're a species.
-
Oh, first contact... so many choices... Vulcans would be interesting.
If we're going after ANYTHING as a potential alien species though, finding Equestria would be nice. No, I'm not kidding. Benevolent diarchy with communism/socialism that actually WORKS, finding what you're good at and being able to enjoy what you do for a living for the rest of your life? magic? being able to actually TALK to the resident deities? Sign me up.

Twi'leks, Togrutas, and Zabraks of either gender, female Twi'leks and Tougrutas are really hot as fuck(just saying).

Didn't that movie have Jim Carrey in it??

I have a fan theory, that Equestria is located within the Star Wars Universe, and Princess Celestia is doing Palpatine's and Vader's bidding. It's a prefect way to combine my two favorite loves. :D
-
If I weren't under the threat of assimilation, I'd want to meet the Borg and just...study them for a while.
What? They're fascinating.
-
Nicki: Yes, it did have Jim Carrey in it :)
-
Turians and or Quarians would be interesting to meet hell the whole Mass Effect species list even the Batarians would be cool to meet(Also I kinda want to fight a Krogan even though i know i will probably get my ass handed to me tenfold.)
